doh, that little golden nugget is also interesting - one indicates a directory, the other a file. It is actually correct that it is not defined. Trying to determine that they are the same by looking at the title is actually futile as the real variable is the path and the define does not look at the path.
For the alias, it is not used as an alias identifier in puppet - if you for instance try this:
notify { 'n1': alias => 'yay::awesome' }
notify { 'n2': }
Notify['yay::awesome'] -> Notify['n2']
That fails with error "Could not find resource 'Notify[yay::awesome]'"
Likewise - this code:
notify { 'n1': alias => 'yay::awesome' }
notice defined(Notify['yay::awesome'])
For me notices false both with and without --app_management. So, is the "aliased file name" (dropping the ending '/') actually in the alias meta param? Or is the mechanism different?
The documentation for alias is here: https://docs.puppet.com/puppet/latest/reference/metaparameter.html#alias and it says that alias is set to title if both title and namevar are set. That is a quite strange construct, the documentation than goes on and says it pretty much does not work for anything except relationships. But, the examples above does not

from the puppet side this fix didn't seem to change anything with regards to File resources. i can create them with newlines, as charlie stated. but puppet resource doesn't know how to deal with them:

we have some simple exported resource tests, but they use the catalog as the source of resources, which does not contain the tags. so i think any tests around this will have to go into pe_acceptance_tests

Release Notes Summary:
This adds the ability to cache groups of facts for a specified length of time. Adding the name of a fact group along with a duration to the `ttls` section of the config file will cause Facter to only resolve that group of facts once, until the cache expires.Example:facts : { ttls : [ { "kernel" : 30 days }, { "file system" : 1 hour } ] }will cause kernel and file system facts to be cached for 30 days and 1 hour, respectively. The names of cacheable fact groups can be found using the `--list-cache-groups` command line option.The location of the cache is `/opt/puppetlabs/facter/cache/cached_facts/` on Unix and `C:\ProgramData\PuppetLabs\facter\cache\cached_fact\` on Windows.

A helper mechanism is needed since: functions cannot hold state, and this is needed when implementing something like a key by key lookup from an external source (for session key, private cached data, etc.) undef is valid value and cannot be used to signal "not found" there needs to be a way for a called function to provide explanations of its actions, and these needs to be appropriately nested. Not sure I did write that. I think Henrik Lindberg may have cleaned up the description after I created the ticket. I think I originally just reported the difference in behaviour. Fixing defined does sound better though Are there likely to be other ways the app_management setting results in different behaviour? Since puppet doesn't enable it by default, perhaps rspec-puppet shouldn't either? This was my main problem. Right now In Puppet < 4.8.0 , there are two levels of data provider configuration:* The top level, where you make an exclusive choice of one data provider mechanism for a given environment or module. (With the {{environment_data_provider}} setting or {{environment_provider}} in metadata.json.) . Currently supporter are 'hiera' (v4) and 'function'. * The "hiera v4" level, where you write a hierarchy of sources and each source can specify its backend. (Drawing from a different pool than the data providers; currently only yaml and json, soon including hocon.)It makes more sense to unify these in the hierarchy config. That way, a user can combine any number of data providers as they choose. For complex backends like Jerakia, you could just use a single hierarchy level. We also want to address:* the fact that backends for hiera as well as data providers for lookup are currently not isolated to an environment and using different versions of these in different environments have undefined (that is known to be bad) behavior.* having an API for writing data providers that offers support for what backends needs to do (caching, handle key by key values, handle lookup options)* switch to using hocon format in a lookup.conf as this is the format we want to support across all configuration files, and it reflects the name of the "lookup" feature* offer advanced capabilities without affecting the original hiera data format (interpolation and "data functions") as it is mostly architected for string interpolationIn order to do this we will:* Add support for {{lookup.conf}} having higher priority than a {{hiera.yaml}} (v4) in environments and modules such that if a module or an environment has a lookup.conf, the information in a hiera.yaml is ignored (and leads to a deprecation warning).* If a hiera.yaml is present, and there is no lookup.conf, the hiera.yaml is honored but a deprecation warning is issued* Define a "v5" format that is used in lookup.conf (the version is a bump up from v4 to avoid confusion when looking at such a file).* The support for the v4 hiera.yaml files will be dropped in a future version when enough time has been given to those that want to migrate their use of the experimental implementation. The defined method does not detect a resource by alias unless app_management is true. The if-statement then holds true and an attempt is made to create the resource again, this time using a title that results in the same alias. That fails. This can be fixed in one of two ways. Either the defined method is changed so that it indeed does recognize aliases regardless of app_management setting, or it is changed to never do that. Alex Dreyer, you write "Runs as expected", which seems to suggest the latter. To me that is inconsistent. If a resource reference will cause a subsequent redefinition error, then I think defined should report the resource that it conflicts with as existing when that reference is used as a key. I.e., the code in the description should never fail. Title: Message Title Charlie Sharpsteen commented on PUP-6670 Re: Newlines break Puppet tag validation If we're lucky, all "automatic" tags are added through the tag_if_valid function, which silently discards strings that don't pass the regex: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/util/tagging.rb#L42 That was the case for the issue that uncovered this bug: resource titles were being added to the tag set if they passed the regex. Additionally, having an invalid tag attached to a resource didn't seem to bother the agent at all. Puppet runs were succeeding and catalogs were being applied without error and successful reports were being sent back. The reason we noticed the issue was that exported resources weren't available for collection, which led us to notice the catalog in PuppetDB was months out of date, which led to the error messages about new catalogs being rejected due to bad tags. So, agent-side testing might not uncover any errors when invalid tags are being accepted.
