Decryption is a relatively costly procedure. That's why a lookup_key is more suitable. The implementation does of course read and parse the complete eyaml file only once. It then uses the cache provided by the $context parameter to remember which of the values that has been decrypted. As a comparison, the original eyaml backend (included in the hiera_eyaml gem) also reads the only once, but it parses all data on each key lookup, then it decrypts one value and discards everything else. Eric Thompson, not sure what you mean by "return a hash". The value for a key can be always be a hash and we have never provided a way to return all keys in Hiera. The actual lookup is not in any way affected by the choice of function so from the lookup callers perspective, it doesn't matter if a data_hash or a lookup_key is used. It's completely invisible. The parameter is used in the "bash in place" code to determine which command is older. This also required modifying the terminus to include that parameter in the POST. While working on this patch, I found it difficult to thread the new producer-timestamp value through the stack for enqueuing. There's also a commit in this set that refactors the enqueuing functions to pass a "command request" through the stack. That map gets created (and validated) by the service, which is then passed through the stack. This PR depends on https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppetdb/pull/2152, which needs to go in first. A Hiera, version 5 _lookup_key_ function for *eyaml* should be added. The function should be dependent on a new {{hiera_eyaml}} feature. The feature should require the Gem with the same name.The added function will rely on the capabilities provided by the hiera_eyaml gem and hence use the same options etc. that the eyaml gem does.If eyaml is configured as a backend in Hiera 3, that declaration should instead make use of the added function.
