Tama, your best practices question falls outside the scope of this product engineering ticketing system. That said, certificates are integral to the Puppet Agent/Server model as they are used to establish identity as well as encryption, so there is no supported practice to select as best.

could you give us an update of the best practices to disable agent SSL certification... Therefore, there is no need for extra SSL protection by Puppet.
There isn't currently a way to disable SSL, because puppet relies on client certs for client authentication (so it's more than confidentiality and integrity). Puppet also relies on client certs to provide trusted facts during compilation. The question of disabling SSL has come up before, eg. https://groups.google.com/d/msg/puppet-users/5Y4BgGgsoRk/8A6GThP_BgAJ. I'd suggest filling a new ticket as it's unrelated to this particular issue.

Jira (PUP-1053) Resource defaults and automatic tags are applied after collectors are evaluated

While we very much like to see a sane tagging system I don't see how we can change this without creating a total mess for users in general as it would break their code (lots of things would be tagged with tags they currently do not get and this would mean that there is plenty of opportunity for nasty surprises. It may be possible to add another tagging function that does tagging eagerly but that is not something we have looked into. To be begin with, I would like to see a spec for how we actually would want tags to work. As Charlie pointed out above how it currently works is not great.

Jira (PUP-9392) Text Fragmentation: Incomplete phrases in string resources

Re: Text Fragmentation: Incomplete phrases in string resources

How is a/an handled for other languages (if there is a difference?) when the word is unknown beforehand? The issue formatter is configurable, but there is only an english implementation available. In addition to a_an there is also a {the}} and plural_s methods available. (I.e. there is a need to look at all those calls as well). The implementation is in label_provder.rb. We basically have one actual label provider (for the language) in model_label_provider.rb - it produces for example text like "Literal Integer" for an AST integer value element. It in turn includes the basic LabelProvider that can do the a/an, A/An, The, and a couple of other things. Thus in the code in the "issues.rb", you see things like (label) which means it will call the model label provider to get human readable text for some element. The ModelLabelProvider also works with the type system to produce apropriate string form for a data type (for example Integer, Integer[10,20], etc). The good thing is that the logic is contained pretty much in Issues, ModelLabelProvider, and LabelProvider; and those are configured in one particular place (i.e. it would be possible to have an implementation that is specific for some other language and to configure that at runtime). Alternatively, we could redesigned how it works - but would potentially require many combinations of words with a/an, the, etc. Happy to help in any way...

Modern versions of Puppet require that the data they serialize to JSON is proper UTF-8. When facts have an incorrect encoding, this currently does not raise an error until it is serialized, at which point it is far too late, and the error message is not helpful. Instead, Facter itself should raise an error about this, indicating the specific fact which returned bad data. This will provide better context for

if we know when this will ship, approx, it'd be great if someone could set a fix version. our new process for tickets related to (closed) support escalations is to ensure there is a "Fix Version" set so the related tickets don't languish in backlogs. In particular to this issue, we expect many more customers to use the agent module for upgrades as their deployments EOL.

hi y'all. please set a fix version when we know where the fix will go. hopefully this will prevent tickets like this getting lost or not prioritized when they are no longer associated with a (closed) support escalation.

When getting started with bolt having to create a module inside the modulepath is an unnecessary burden. It should be possible to loads plans and tasks from plans and tasks of the current directory. The current best practice for packaging bolt content is to create a module in /site/mymodule. It would be more intuitive if that code could be placed at the top level of the repo directly in a plans or tasks directory.

Re: Text Fragmentation: Incomplete phrases in string resources

One way to resolve this would be as follows: sentence pattern 1: "The _expression_ `%{_expression_}[]` cannot use %{actual} where %{expected} is expected" sentence pattern 2: "The _expression_ `"%{_expression_}[]`cannot use %{actual} where one of the following is expected: %{expected}" === Also, look at the other string resources where label provider method `label.a_an` is used.

This is failing acceptance tests on some systems because it no longer defaults to facter, and the facts reported by the script differ from facter's output.

Re: Add collection operations to Puppet core

The PR has a few examples. I've found these specifically useful in Bolt, but we thought they might be general enough to deserve adding to Puppet. I've found group_by useful to separate targets into categories based on properties of those targets. For partition it's usually to separate by a boolean condition, what otherwise might be two opposite filter operations.

Jira (PUP-9389) Add new parameter to File for tempfile staging location

Re: Add new parameter to File for tempfile staging location

Yeah, in the case where an application (like sudo) is doing "live" parsing of files instead of waiting for a reload command, I don't see another way around making sure that the application always has either the old config, or the new one. For something like a daemon that waits for a reload command before parsing all of the files, the validation command could be a script that sets up a new directory before running the validation on that temp directory it set up, but as the comment in the patch alludes to, that could leave the "real" daemon in a broken state if we're unable to clean up the temp file for some reason (For example: power loss). I'd say that this is even more general of a problem than when someone is concerned with using validate_cmd. I'd be fine with adding a "stage this file here" parameter, and documenting it that it defaults to the same directory as the final destination with a big warning that file replacement is only guaranteed to be atomic if the staging location is on the same filesystem as the final location. I probably wouldn't have the comments about being intended only for use with validate_cmd as this seems more generally useful than that, though mentioning that it might be useful when using validate_cmd seems fine.

Brett Kochendorfer thanks for the suggestion. We create the tempfile in the same directory as it ensures the temp and destination files are on the same volume, so the rename will be atomic. We lose that guarantee if we allow arbitrary staging directories, but I don't see another way to solve the issue you mention. /cc Jacob Helwig

Jira (PUP-9391) HP-UX usermod syntax is incorrect

Re: HP-UX usermod syntax is incorrect

We are deploying with 5.3.5.  I have not checked other versions for this issue. The issue is that HP-UX forces command line arguments to usermod to be in a specific order.  Namely, the "login" must be the last argument. In lib/puppet/provider/user/hpux.rb, the code appends a "-F" argument at the end, past the "login" parameter. From the manpage: usermod(1M) usermod(1M) NAME usermod - modify a user login on the system SYNOPSIS usermod [-u uid [-o]] [-g group] [-G group[,group]...] [-d dir [-m [-i]]] [-s shell] [-c comment] [-f inactive] [-l new_logname] [-e expire] [-p encrypted_password] [-F] [-P -S alternate_password_file] login The change we made to  lib/puppet/provider/user/hpux.rb to repair the error we got, was: $ diff hpux.rb.ORIG hpux.rb 27c27,31 < super.insert(1,"-F") — > cmd = super > #puts "in deletecmd, cmd {cmd}" > cmd.insert(1,"-F") > #puts "in deletecmd after insert, cmd {cmd}" > cmd 32c36,38 < cmd << "-F" — > #puts "in modifycmd, cmd {cmd}" > cmd.insert(1,"-F") > #puts "in modifycmd after insert, cmd {cmd}" Obviously in production one would remove the commented-out "puts" debugging. To reproduce: Deploy on HP-UX (our system is at: $ uname -a HP-UX slc10ddl B.11.31 U ia64 4067183464 unlimited-user license ) Deploy a new user. cd to that user's $HOME dir in a shell (this is why the -F param is required: -F Force the changes, even if the login is currently in use.) Modify something about that user, and deploy that change.

Puppet Version: Puppet Server Version: OS Name/Version: Describe your issue in as much detail as possible… Describe steps to reproduce… Desired Behavior: Actual Behavior: Please take a moment and attach any relevant log output and/or manifests. This will help us immensely when troubleshooting the issue. Examples: Run puppet agent with --test --trace --debug Relevant sections of /var/log/puppetlabs/puppetserver/puppetserver.log or any applicable logs from the same directory. For more detailed information turn up the server logs by upping the log level in the server's logback.xml Relevant sections of configurations files (puppet.conf, hiera.conf, Server's conf.d, defaults/sysconfig) For memory issues with server heap dumps are also helpful.

When using an environmentpath setting with multiple colon-separated paths specified, static catalog compilation does not correctly identify the environment path of the environment being compiled and therefore incorrectly concludes that no file is ever eligible for inlined metadata. See https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/indirector/catalog/compiler.rb#L173 and, from 5.5.x, the same line here: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/5.5.x/lib/puppet/indirector/catalog/compiler.rb#L173 The line in question assumes that there will only ever be a single environmentpath specified. Instead it should use the environmentpath entry which is associated with the environment name being compiled (which was presumably determined considerably earlier in the compilation).

Jira (PUP-1053) Resource defaults and automatic tags are applied after collectors are evaluated

Re: Resource defaults and automatic tags are applied after collectors are evaluated

Is there anything planned to fix this issue? Or provide a sane workaround? In my case we have accounts in hiera (using tag to set system roles). We would like to make use of this feature instead of adding users multiple times (into role hiera data).
