Change By:

Release Notes Summary:
Adds a "puppet ssl bootstrap" action that will perform the same SSL initialization that "puppet agent -t" does, but without the catalog application lifecycle (pluginsync, requesting a catalog, applying it, sending a report). The new action accepts the same {{--onetime}} and {{--waitforcert}} options that {{puppet agent -t}} does. The former is useful so it doesn't wait indefinitely. The latter is useful if you want to increase how frequently the agent polls for its certificate to be signed.

Jira (FACT-1603) Can't fail a puppet run when a critical fact is missing

Re: Can't fail a puppet run when a critical fact is missing

Josh Cooper: I actually just ran into something like this, and ended up here. Essentially, in our environment after upgrading to Puppet v4 (and what I assume will subsequently be the same with v5 and v6, though I've not traced the code for those versions yet), we ran into a resolution failure for the gce fact due to a network timeout. We have a fail() in our Puppet manifests to prevent Puppet from progressing further, but because it didn't bail out completely (as is I think it would have with v3 - per the description in this ticket), it ended up submitting a whole slew of busted facts back into PuppetDB. We rely on these fact values as queried from PuppetDB for other things (CMDB, inventory, etc) I understand this likely isn't a Facter issue, and is probably something to do with Puppet's implementation of Facter, because it continues to trigger the replace facts command even if a resolution fails, but I'm curious what your thoughts are here - if you treat this as the same issue, a non-issue at all, or have a suggested workaround to ensure broken facts don't end up in PuppetDB.

Josh Cooper you were saying you think this is a duplicate ticket? I was thinking it would be more detail on why the different servers couldn't be reached rather than not having puppet fall back to the defaults for server:masterport when none of the servers in server_list are reachable.

https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PUP-6165 removes the capability to order code in anyway but manifest, this should be reflected in slides. the ordering labs should talk to ordering as it exists now, any expectation on random order should be removed but a callout to pre puppet6 version should be made.

I have several things I can do as a workaround  but I still don't think there should be collisions between environments for facts, and exported resources (or really anything).  Should the environments not be kept isolated from each other completely?  Everything else is now separate (per-environment hiera, per-environment modules) but we don't have a separation in puppetdb

Hi Tom Parker, We don't believe this is a bug issue with Puppet but would like to help you solve this issue. Instead of using separate environments, would having a class for your package downloads and assigning a schedule to the class to only run overnight solve your issue?   Also our Puppet community slack might be helpful for talking through solutions to this. We have office-hours with specific teams, as well as general help available 24/7 https://slack.puppet.com

Sean Millichamp You are correct - copying each time in the loop, and each time the hash is a little bigger is what kills performance. It is a common use case, and for small sized hashes it is not too bad. For bigger hashes, one of the techniques I showed work much faster.

Pointing a set of Puppet Agents to different Puppet Servers is only possible by changing the "server" or "port" values in the puppet.conf. In this new approach, we are trying to deploy our servers in a Kubernetes cluster and point all the agents to the same server and port (the cluster's Ingress). For this to work, we need a mechanism to indicate where the traffic should be redirected. The easiest way to do this is by setting a header in the Puppet Agent's request. This change will allow to set extra headers to be send every time Puppet Agent is executed on the node. Our set up is just a use case for this new feature but the community could also benefit form it.

looks like this is a problem in debian packaging as `apt-get install augeas-tools` fixed the issue

Jira (PUP-9561) puppet language functions are 11,350x slower than ruby functions

Re: puppet language functions are 11,350x slower than ruby functions

Thanks for the suggestions. Given that I can't use group_by yet (on 5.5) I'll probably stick with the Ruby I'm using, but Henrik's suggestions were clever and interesting to read. Would you mind clarifying what part of the original is responsible for the exponential running time? Is it the last line in the reduce that merges the results? Is that because each time through the loop requires allocating a new hash and copying all of the elements in the previous hash, before doing the merge? I believe that is a fairly common pattern I use in reduce, often to manipulate a data structure I can't otherwise modify (such as in an each construct, for example) because of immutable variables.
