 The expansion is done here: https://github.com/puppetlabs/leatherman/blob/master/execution/src/posix/execution.cc#L142 The question is what should we do here? Keep a list of sh builtins which we should check against when expanding the first argument?

 Jean Bond the investigation for this ticket was done on Facter, but the fix was actually on a different project (Leatherman / LTH-163) - which is a dependency, so I'm not sure this should have fix versions on Facter.

  Re: AIX user resource fails

 Hi, I understand your concerns, however you have not addressed my questions. The change in the chpasswd command was merged into Puppet 4.10: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/commit/ee982cf532f1a253426b7e76f2352f9ce77af61e, so it's technically impossible to have Puppet 6.5.0 executing the chpasswd command with the user parameter, since the code is not there anymore. The AIX version is irrelevant here, as we do not differentiate our code based on that. That's why I requested more information, such as the contents of the /opt/puppetlabs/puppet/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/puppet/provider/user/aix.rb file. I'm guessing what's happening here is either:

the agent version on the affected systems does not include the previously mentioned fix (puppet version is not 6.5.0)
an upgrade was done on the affected systems, from a version without the fix to a version with the fix, which ended badly, so puppet --version reports 6.5.0 but the behavior does not reflect this; in which case, please reinstall puppet-agent on the target systems
the puppet/provider/user/aix.rb file has been manually tampered with (this is extremely unlikely, but still a possibility)
 I'm afraid that without more information I don't know how to help with this.

 In addition to that, the forcelocal parameter is also being used by the useradd provider. We'd also have to implement a libuser provider for the user type.

 I've put up a PR here: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/pull/7695 The only changes to the groupadd provider are the deprecation warnings, directing Puppet users to the separate libuser provider. Next steps would be to actually remove the libuser feature and the forcelocal parameter for Puppet 7.

 James Ralston, makes sense. The thing is, groupadd is currently not being defaulted to any platform, in fact it's the only suitable provider for Linux, so that's why it gets picked. When we introduce the new libuser provider, we have to explicitly default groupadd to avoid having libuser getting picked up by mistake.

 This makes me think we won't ever want to default this provider: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1028544#c2

with libuser itself probably being obsoleted within the next few years
 I believe it's right to implement it since the way this is being handled right now is wrong (using binaries from 2 different packages - shadow and libuser - in the same provider). We shouldn't prefer libuser if both groupadd and libuser are present since libuser doesn't have 1:1 parity with groupadd regarding its functionalities. For example, libuser doesn't support NIS accounts.

 James Ralston it seems that the only valid use-case for having this provider is being able to benefit from the manages_members feature to manage the membership of an arbitrary group with a single group resource. I'm not sure this warrants a separate provider, this can be accomplished in the existing provider with a conditional feature like:

 has_feature :manages_members if Puppet.features.libuser?

  and then handle the "members" property. Thoughts?

 Hi Chris Card, Mateusz Gozdek, We believe this is linked to LTH-162 and how open file descriptors are handled on Linux (GitHub PR). This should be fixed now, and puppet-agent builds with the fix should be available on the nightlies page over the next few days: http://nightlies.puppet.com/

  Re: group resource type misunderstands/misuses libuser

 James Ralston I checked the reasoning behind the libuser code in puppet, it was introduced here: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/pull/1442

Some applications require local accounts and the useradd/groupadd commands currently used by the provider will not create a local account if they already exist remotely. The libuser commands luseradd/lgroupadd will allow a local name to duplicate a remote name. So these commands are used to force the local account creation.
 That's where the forcelocal/libuser misunderstanding comes from. We'll investigate this further.

  Re: blank/negative facter cache due to timed out EC2 metadata

 Due to the way resolvers are handled in facter, we can't have caching granularity for single facts, just cache groups (which in this case is EC2, containing both user and metadata). So if either the user-data or meta-data fact does not resolve, neither will be cached. We can provide a configurable parameter just for the HTTP request timeout (which is only used inside the ec2_resolver so it wouldn't affect other facts).

 Hi Gustavo Randich, It's not clear from the ticket description what's the desired fix here. My understanding is that the EC2 metadata request works, but takes longer than 5 seconds and execution times out. Would you prefer to have the timeout parameter configurable, or have it increased? How long does the lookup take?

 This is interesting because the libfacter specs job is not being run on travis, probably because the docker container doesn't have ruby. In this case CMake probably sees that you have Ruby installed and also tries to run the specs. You need to bundle install inside facter/lib before running make test.

 Hi Tim Meusel, You can build this by following the steps from the PKGBUILD (from prepare() and build()): https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git/tree/trunk/PKGBUILD?h=packages/facter Let me know if this works for you.

 Hi Tim Meusel, Those are just some new warnings that came with GCC 8.0. You can bypass them by passing the ENABLE_CXX_WERROR=OFF parameter to CMake, like this: cmake .. -DENABLE_CXX_WERROR=OFF. I'll fix the warnings in libwhereami, but in the meantime you can get it compiled by using that parameter.

 Setting $deviceconfdir in the main section makes puppetserver want to create it, which it shouldn't. Starting puppetserver with an affected agent fails because of this:

 Hi Antony Jordan, this is quite an old ticket and we're not sure we want to keep supporting yaourt, as it is not even mentioned anymore on the AUR helpers wiki page and many users have complained about security issues regarding it. If you'd like to implement support for a different AUR helper such as yay (which is in active development), please open a ticket with that in scope. Thanks!

 Well we can use the exact same implementation that was done for OS X then (command outputs are very similar if not identical, since OS X also inherits from BSD in a way). It executes route -n get default, which is the command I requested you to execute, searches the line that begins with "interface: " and gets what's after it, which would be vmx0 in your case. This sounds like what you want. Your solution of skipping loopback interfaces sounds good as well, but it doesn't really handle what happens if there are only loopback interfaces present.

 Hi, I did read your messages . Just wanted to confirm my hunch. Thanks for the output. Assuming your primary interface is vmx0, something similar to the osx implementation needs to be done in bsd/networking_resolver.cc as well: https://github.com/puppetlabs/facter/blob/2aa2d1cd6487f73fb8e311cf027dcf30c2166e28/lib/src/facts/osx/networking_resolver.cc#L52 From what I see, BSD has no specific implementation to figure out the primary interface. You can tackle it if you are in a rush, I won't be able to get to it until next week. Cheers

 Your configuration is somewhat special, as you only have loopback and vmx interfaces. My run is similar except I have DHCP configured. What is your output of:

 $ route -n get default

  and

 $ netstat -rn

  Most of the facter functionality for this resides here: https://github.com/puppetlabs/facter/blob/master/lib/src/facts/bsd/networking_resolver.cc

 Hi, FreeBSD is community-maintained and as such we do not provide official support for it. However, I tried running this on a FreeBSD machine to reproduce your case. I added a dummy loopback interface and ran facter:

 root@freebsd:~ # ifconfig
