They are not breaking changes and could be done outside of Puppet 6.  Ethan mentioned that you might need support from the Windows team for pup-6919 for some plumbing work that needs to happen.

 Windows is unlikely to get to this anytime soon but Ethan's recommendation is to get this done sooner rather than later. Branan Riley or Josh Cooper if you are able to pick this up before Windows it would be great to reassign it. This would be a good opportunity for Erwin Hom to pair with someone and get to know the Puppet inner workings better so that he can be more involved in i18n testing of Puppet.

If each line in the list forms a full sentence and is externalized by itself, this should be okay. The only fragment of a sentence I can see in the examples is "which depends on ..." We could fix this by changing it to "This depends on ..." or "'% {name}
' (% {version}
) depends on ..." so that it is a complete sentence.
I'm not sure if I'm fully understanding the problem you want to highlight though.

There are some concatenated strings in Puppet that are resulting in mistranslations because the translator doesn't have the full context of what the complete sentence is supposed to be, and cannot change the sentence order,
Example: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/indirector/catalog/compiler.rb#L273-L276

Brett Gray or Ethan Brown may be able to provide input on the UTF8 issue that seems to be occurring when switching over to use a cached catalog.

If debug messages must be in the same POT file as all other messages, it would be ideal if we would have a way to identify that the message is only used when in debug mode, such as a comment to translators, so we can avoid translation for certain locales. We should complete the i18n work of externalizing the strings so they are localizable for locales that need it.

Maggie Dreyer The Transifex integration is currently working on all repos containing user-facing strings that are shipping in Glisan. There is a webhook in Transifex. When PO files in Transifex reach a stage of being fully translated + fully reviewed, this triggers the webhook to push the completed PO file back to the source Github repo. This process is documented here

Things like, can we use a single config file to configure the integration with multiple repos, can we have multiple PO files in a repo, do PO files all need to have a unique file name, etc.

Geoff Nichols Moses Mendoza Can you add a list of questions here that you have about security of the Transifex integration? I have set up an API user in github specifically for the integration, and also an API user in Transifex that is also used only for this purpose. The integration requires the Github API user's name and access token, and the Transifex API user's name and password.

Thanks Maggie Dreyer. Let me know if I can help with anything. Scott McClellan is also a good person to ask. This gem has been added to code manager's ruby projects too so it might help to check that code base CODEMGMT-725. If you search by "gettext" in the r10k repo you'll see how they added it in there.

Jira (PUP-6763) Make CI job to update POT file

  Re: Make CI job to update POT file

Here's some info from David Lutterkort regarding possible overlaps and differences with the CI job that is currently in development for Clojure: I would think that the main fiddly bits will be the same between those Ruby and Clojure - stuff like generating a POT, committing it, pushing it into Transifex, pulling in PO files etc. will mostly be the same. The main differences I see between Clojure and Ruby are

gettext related tooling that must be installed

command to run to generate POT

location and naming conventions for POT and PO files

need to compile PO files to class files in Clojure, but not in Ruby (we might at some point want to look into compiling MO files, but that's very low priority) If the CI job is written with the above things in mind, so that it becomes easy to plug language-specific hooks into the job for the above points, I think we can reuse the CI job, and it should be relatively low effort to do that. It might be worth trying to develop the CI job for Clojure and Ruby in tandem if that's at all possible in terms of bandwidth.

Michael Smith Hailee Kenney It looks like you have translation_tooling.rb to generate a POT from the YAML. We'll likely need some more tickets to complete the whole workflow for localizing the Core Facts page.
Is the Ruby script incorporated into a Jenkins job to automatically generate the POT when there are changes in the YAML? Can you provide a brief description of the workflow that is currently in place and any remaining work we'll need to do to automate the generation of the POT and PO?

 POT files are generated automatically as a result of gettext_setup parsing of strings in code. In order to automate this process, we need to find out what needs to happen (and when).This may be part of one or more CI jobs. * Find answer to question "What is the directory structure for translation (PO and POT) files?" A: In the repo, you should have a 'locales' folder. The POT and PO files should be in the locales folder * Design a workflow for POT file generation* For the POC, this should be a close as possible to the workflow used for other languages.PE-15457 may provide additional context.

Wrap one simple string* in the facter repo with the _() gettext function Create a CI job that uses the gettext-setup gem tooling to generate a POT file, and a PO file for Japanese Add the facter repo to the Transifex integration and test that the PO file is automatically pulled into Transifex when updates are made to it (Larissa) When the PO file reaches 100% translated and reviewed in Transifex, it is automatically updated in the facter repo (Larissa) Add a setting to check the user's locale and display supported languages or default to English Test on an OS that has the environment set to Japanese Consider stripping the line numbers out of the POT file to reduce churn
*Simple string means a string that isn't composed or concatenated
Talk to Libby Molina about the CI jobs she is creating for Clojure and _javascript_
Out of scope is an opt-out option to turn off localized strings, but this should be considered for another ticket.

 Goal here is to incorporate the gettext_setup gem into such that we can externalize a single string in puppet and produce a pot file (presumably from a rake task). Does not include externalizing the string or producing the pot file.

 Categorize strings in Puppet that require externalization for i18n, e.g. with aautomated tool that can be expanded later to check PRs and integrated with CIfor all Ruby projects. Categorize strings as basic static strings, simple formattedstrings, strings requiring pluralization and/or additional translation context, complexcases that may require manual intervention, and strings that should not betranslated. Investigate removing line numbers from the POT file to reduce churn.

Hailee Kenney Thanks for the additional context. I just talked to Michael Smith about this some more and he's going to add some notes about what we discussed. I like the idea of adding the Accept-Language header to the generated HTML page so that the user automatically sees the correct language based on their browser preferences, although it's also good to include a language selector menu in the footer of the page so a user can opt out of seeing their local language. We'll probably need to work with Nicholas Fagerlund on that part. cc: David Lutterkort in case you have thoughts on this.
I think I'd need to talk to the Modules team about the module plug-ins for custom facts and deal with that as part of a separate ticket. I'm not sure yet what we would want to i18n for those, but David Schmitt has been working on a plan for modules.
I'll schedule some time for a quick chat including someone from the docs team so we can talk about the full flow of how this will work.

Hailee Kenney Responding to your hipchat message... It would be good to get a little more info on this file. What are you planning to target for translation? Will all of the keys need to stay in English? Will we translate all of the values, or are there some values that need to be excluded from translation? Is this yaml file just for the core facts that ship in Facter? How do users access the fact documentation? Is this YAML file only used to auto-generate https://docs.puppet.com/facter/3.3/core_facts.html, or are the values also used elsewhere? Transifex does support YAML files, so we could potentially add this YAML file into the Github-Transifex integration and have Transifex pull the YAML file directly from the repo whenever updates are made to it. See the note about having a single root element that is the language code. It might be worth having a conversation about this ticket so I can get some more context.

Not that I know of, but we should. Are you thinking of internal or external documentation? I wonder if this will be an issue for users, or will users on Japanese Windows already have the console configured correctly to handle UTF-8. We should definitely have internal documentation on this for anyone testing UTF-8 on Windows, and possibly external documentation if it seems necessary. Pinging Brett Gray because he has been doing some user-level testing of UTF-8 on Windows. See the test plan
