Cases i) and iii) would be different c) for the sake of consistency make that use instead (let hiera.yaml v 5 win) - it means you can turn off the 'function' data provider by simply placing a heira.yaml v5 file in your module/env. My concern regarding your answers Henrik Lindberg, is the following: a) This means that by just installing a new version of Puppet, a hiera.yaml (v4) file that was previously ignored, suddenly kicks in. b) OK. Can't see how that would be problematic. c) In version 5, the hiera.yaml is supposed to be authoritative and omnipotent. Here you suggest that the old and deprecated data-provider setting trumps a hiera.yaml version 5 (it didn't trump the lookup.yaml). When we decided to use lookup.yaml we also said that the fact that it was present in the environment or module root was enough to indicate that it should be used. In version 4, that was not the case. The hiera.yaml had to be accompanied by a data-provider setting in the environment.conf or metadata.json that indicated that the data provider was "hiera". Here is a matrix showing the all combinations of data provider setting and hiera.yaml file versions 4 and 5. The "warn" in the matrix does not reflect a deprecation warning (it's assumed that deprecation warnings will be printed under control of the strict option whenever a version 4 file or a data provider setting is present). How do we answer the questions? data-provider setting hiera.yaml v4 hiera.yaml v5 no hiera.yaml == none or no setting ignore, warn, or use? use == hiera use warn, error, or use? default config != hiera
