Jira (PUP-5831) Add a Binary type and runtime object
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-5831 Re: Add a Binary type and runtime object Jayant Sane What we ended up with is an encoding of rich data (including Binary) that PDB can handle (it is just a hash). There is extra type information in that hash which PDB just sees as additional information in the hash it is storing. Thus, it works even if not perfect. Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-5831 Re: Add a Binary type and runtime object Eric Thompson You took out a couple of things from the acceptance criteria: convert a Binary to String using different formats (base64 strict, relaxed, URL safe), as opaque redacted 'binary' or "Binary" string value, or as an Array of Integers to Array of Integers # To UTF-8 string notice String(Binary(), "%s") # errors if invalid UTF-8 in the binary # To array of integers (each byte is one integer) notice Array(Binary()) The base64 outputs are produced with the String formats %p, %b, and %B and %u. There is also %t, %T which just produces the type name "binary" or "BINARY" as you may not want long gobledygook output from a Binary.

Jira (PUP-5831) Add a Binary type and runtime object
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-5831 Re: Add a Binary type and runtime object The ruby example creates a string with three bytes 66, 67, 68. The puppet example Binary([66,67,68]) does the same, only that the string buffer is internal to the Binary and the created binary instance manifests itself in string form using base64 as opposed to the Ruby string which becomes the character/text representation of those bytes in the Ruby string encoding (in the example that would be ASCII-8Bit). There is no way in puppet to take a Binary and turn it into a textual representation in some other encoding. It is possible to create a Binary from a String that is in any encoding - but not the reverse as that would expose the concept of string encoding in the puppet language. A ByteInteger is a type only available locally in the function that creates an instance. It is simply an integer value 0-255. You cannot create byte-packed ints in puppet, if by that you mean that two 64bit integers would be represented as 8 bytes in big or small endian format. Jira (PUP-5831) Add a Binary type and runtime object
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg updated an issue Puppet / PUP-5831 Add a Binary type and runtime object Change By: Henrik Lindberg We currently do not have a way of handling binary content in Puppet. Instead we use String values. This is bad because we cannot handle all binary data since we expect strings to be valid UTF-8 text. Thus we need a separate runtime object, and consequently a new type in the type system. We also want these for efficient binary serialization as it would be a shame to serialize binary data in Base64 encoding i a binary format. The name of the type should be {{Binary}}. It does not in itself hold information about its content (that is parameterized with a , no mime content type . The default mime type or similar) as such a feature is "application/octet-stream" subject to where and how the object is used . Other content types could be "image/jpeg" etc. Type Algebra:{code:puppet} * A Binary ['application/octet-stream'] > Binary[] matches all Binary [] > Binary[( instances . +)] * The Binary [x] == Binary[x] type is derived from Any {code} * an application-stream binary accepts all other mime types.* a binary accepts another binary with a longer mime path starting with the entire LHS mimetype.* two Two Binary types instances are equal iff the mime type if their content is equal The runtime type is constructed by calling the type. The constructor has the following signatures:{code:puppet}Encoding = Enum[base64, text, zip]String $content_type, Encoding $encoding, String $text_representationString $content_type, Binary $content{code}The {{Encoding}} describes how the text It should be transformed possible to binary* base64 create a Binary from a String ; the UTF verbatim bytes, or as one of three possible Base64 encodings (relaxed, strict, URL - 8 string is base64 encoded safe). * text; the UTF-8 text is sent as is The base64 encoding should follow RFC 3548 or RFC 4648 with mandatory '=' padding and unlimited line length and accept both \n and \r\n as line ending and being insensitive to all whitespace, all non base 64 non whitespace characters are forbidden. In a separate ticket, a compress() function should be added that can compress binary data and produce a new Binary in compressed format (with appropriate mime type translation of the content type). Note, the base 64 encoding here has nothing to do with how the Binary is serialized as that depends on the serialization format. Add Comment

Jira (PUP-5831) Add a Binary type and runtime object
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-5831 Re: Add a Binary type and runtime object It is not meaningful to complete this before it is possible to use the Binary type as content in a resource. Although possible to cheat and just include a binary string (since that works because of Pson), that is not really what we want. It would however give users a way of future proofing binary data. The work to get binary data into the catalog is similar to getting support for Encrypted/Sensitive, and there is also work that needs to take place on the agent side in the types/providers where it makes sense to support a Binary type. Seems best to do all of that in an orchestrated fashion. OTOH, we could just merge the Binary type as experimental, it does not really interfere with anything. If we want to do that, the work on the Binary type itself is ready for merge (only waiting for me to make a PR). Ping Kylo Ginsberg for visibility and decision. Jira (PUP-5831) Add a Binary type and runtime object
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg created an issue Puppet / PUP-5831 Add a Binary type and runtime object Issue Type: New Feature Assignee: Unassigned Created: 2016/02/07 7:53 AM Priority: Normal Reporter: Henrik Lindberg We currently do not have a way of handling binary content in Puppet. The name of the type should be Binary. It is parameterized with a mime content type. The default mime type is "application/octet-stream". Other content types could be "image/jpeg" etc. Type Algebra: Binary['application/octet-stream'] > Binary[type>] Binary[] > Binary[(.+)]
