[PVE-User] Proxmox VE 6.1 released!
Hi all, We are very excited to announce the general availability of Proxmox VE 6.1. It is built on Debian Buster 10.2 and a specially modified Linux Kernel 5.3, QEMU 4.1.1, LXC 3.2, ZFS 0.8.2, Ceph 14.2.4.1 (Nautilus), Corosync 3.0, and more of the current leading open-source virtualization technologies. This release brings new configuration options available in the GUI which make working with Proxmox VE even more comfortable and secure. Editing the cluster-wide bandwidth limit for traffic types such as migration, backup-restore, clone, etc. is possible via the GUI. If the optional package ifupdown2 of the Debian network interface manager is installed, it’s now possible to change the network configuration and reload it in the Proxmox web interface without a reboot. We have improvements to 2-factor authentication with TOTP and U2F. The HA stack has been improved and comes with a new 'migrate' shutdown policy, migrating running services to another node on shutdown. In the storage backend, all features offered by newer kernels with Ceph and KRBD are supported with version 6.1. We have some notable bug fixes, one of them being the QEMU monitor timeout issue or stability improvements for corosync. Countless other bugfixes and smaller improvements are listed in the release notes. [PVE-User] Proxmox VE 6.0 released!
Hi all, We're excited to announce the final release of our Proxmox VE 6.0! It's based on the great Debian 10 codename "Buster" and the latest 5.0 Linux kernel, QEMU 4.0, LXC 3.1.0, ZFS 0.8.1, Ceph 14.2, Corosync 3.0, and more. This major release includes the latest Ceph Nautilus feautures and an improved Ceph management dashboard. We have updated the cluster communication stack to Corosync 3 using Kronosnet, and have a new selection widget for the network making it simple to select the correct link address in the cluster creation wizard. With ZFS 0.8.1 we have included TRIM support for SSDs and also support for native encryption with comfortable key-handling. The new installer supports ZFS root via UEFI, for example you can boot a ZFS mirror on NVMe SSDs (using systemd-boot instead of grub). And as always we have included countless bugfixes and improvements on a lot of places; see the release notes for all details. [PVE-User] Proxmox VE 5.3 released!
Hi all! We are very excited to announce the general availability of Proxmox VE 5.3! Proxmox VE now integrates CephFS, a distributed, POSIX-compliant file system which serves as an interface to the Ceph storage (like the RBD). You can store backupfiles, ISO images, and container templates. CephFS can be created and configured easily with its Metadata server (MDS) in the GUI. We improved disk management and you can now add ZFS raid volumes, LVM, and LVMthin pools as well as additional disks with a traditional file system. The existing ZFS over iSCSI storage plug-in can now access LIO target in the Linux kernel. Other new features are nesting for LXC containers so you can use LXC and LXD inside containers or access NFS or CIFS. If you are adventurous, you can configure PCI passthrough and vGPUs via the GUI. [PVE-User] Proxmox VE 5.0 released!
Hi all, We are very happy to announce the final release of our Proxmox VE 5.0 - based on the great Debian 9 codename "Stretch" and a Linux Kernel 4.10. New Proxmox VE Storage Replication Replicas provide asynchronous data replication between two or multiple nodes in a cluster, thus minimizing data loss in case of failure. For all organizations using local storage the Proxmox replication feature is a great option to increase data redundancy for high I/Os avoiding the need of complex shared or distributed storage configurations. => https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage_Replication With Proxmox VE 5.0 Ceph RBD becomes the de-facto standard for distributed storage. Packaging is now done by the Proxmox team. The Ceph Luminous is not yet production ready but already available for testing. If you use Ceph, follow the recommendations below. We also have a simplified procedure for disk import from different hypervisors. You can now easily import disks from VMware, Hyper-V, or other hypervisors via a new command line tool called ‘qm importdisk’. Other new features are the live migration with local storage via QEMU, added USB und Host PCI address visibility in the GUI, bulk actions and filtering options in the GUI and an optimized NoVNC console. And as always we have included countless bugfixes and improvements on a lot of places. [PVE-User] Proxmox VE 4.4 released!
Hi all! We are really excited to announce the final release of our Proxmox VE 4.4! Most visible change is the new cluster and Ceph dashboard with improved Ceph Server toolkit. For LXC, we support unprivileged containers, CPU core limits and the new restart migration. We also updated the LXC templates for Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, Alpine and Arch. The whole HA stack and the GUI are improved on several places and using Proxmox VE High Availability is now more userfriendly. In clusters, you can define a dedicated migration network, quite useful if you heavily use (live) migrations. Re: [PVE-User] Ceph Performance
Hi, a good start to get a feeling about expected performance, read this great paper from Redhat: http://www.redhat.com/en/resources/red-hat-ceph-storage-clusters-supermicro-storage-servers if you want to build a small three node cluster, you should use a intel 3700 200 GB SSD for your journal. this SSD can be used as journal for 4 or 5 OSD. but note, if this SSD fails, you loose all these OSDs - monitor health status. if you have more budget, think of a SSD only setup (for OSDs). use enterprise class SSDs, with powerloss protection. best, martin On 28.09.2015 18:10, Tobias Kropf - inett GmbH wrote: Hi @ all i have a question to ceph we plan to build our own ceph cluster in datacenter. Re: [PVE-User] On VMware vSphere
vsphere is the market leader and there is some great software, but in a lot of situations Proxmox VE is a good replacement. At least this was the case for several thousands of happy Proxmox VE users. The main reasons why people shift to Proxmox VE: 1. Open source license and far lower costs TCO Did someone remember the vsphere blackout in 2008 - all vmware support lines were overloaded, no one in the world can start VM due a license bug - vmware released a bug fix soon but as all their pages was overloaded, no one could get the fix fast, phone support was totally dead. http://www.infoworld.com/article/2652708/security/vmware-ceo-apologizes-for--time-bomb--mess.html Just a small example for hair-raising bugs from the big players. Every software got bugs, but if the sources are closed its impossible to fix by your own (or pay someone to fix it for you). 2. no extra management server needed, no SPOF in a Proxmox VE Cluster, fast setup 3. great hardware support, a lot of storage option, including Ceph RBD 4. Active and helpful community, but also commercial support for a fair price 5. Latest qemu/KVM and OpenVZ containers Of course, the list is not complete. Some users do also NOT trust US based software companies anymore, as the NSA has direct access to all their data by US law - especially customers outside USA are not that happy about this. So just compare and choose what fits to your setup and needs! Best, Martin ___ pve-user mailing list pve-user@pve.proxmox.com http://pve.proxmox.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pve-user

Re: [PVE-User] CEPH Requirements
Depends on your goals here. Without local disks and fast SSD journal you will not see any performance. Also atom cpu´s are not the winners. If you just want to see how the setup works, install a virtualization on your PC - e.g. just go for a i5 or i7 processor with 16 or 32 gb ram, install your favorite virtualization software and create three virtual pve instance. A good investment is a Samsung 840 evo with 1 TB to store all the virtual disks (I use such a desktop). You can do this on windows or linux or with pve. And of course, you can also do this inside a Proxmox VE cluster. The video tutorial - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImyRUyMBrwo - shows an Proxmox VE cluster with Ceph, running inside an Proxmox VE cluster with Ceph. If you want to see acceptable performance, follow the recommendations on our wiki page - http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Ceph_Server#Recommended_hardware We can get here about 270 mb/s read and write speed inside a window VM (measured with crystal diskmark, replication 3). Re: [PVE-User] problems with 3.2-beta
Hello Adam, thanks for your feedback. For help in your issues with migration or HA, please submit ONE thread for each single problem, multiple complex issues in one thread will lead to non-answers. Here I just answer to your ceph feedback: > 3. The Wiki page on setting up CEPH Server doesn't mention that you can > do most of the setup from within the GUI. Since I have write access > there, I guess I should fix it myself :-). [Martin Maurer] The wiki tells on which step you can start using the GUI: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Ceph_Server#Creating_Ceph_Monitors Also the video tutorial shows what is possible via GUI. > Ceph speeds are barely acceptable (10-20MB/sec) but that's typical of > Ceph in my experience so far, even with caching turned on. (Still a bit > of a letdown compared to Sheepdog's 300MB/sec burst throughput, > though.) [Martin Maurer] 20mb? If you tell your benchmark results, you need to specify what you measure. Our ceph test cluster - explained and described in the wiki page - got about 260 mb/second (with replication 3) read and write speed inside a single KVM guest, eg. Windows (testing with crystaldiskmark). Ceph is not designed to maximum single performance, its designed to scale out, means you can get good performance with a big number of VMs and you can add always more server to increase storage and speed. You can do a simple benchmark for your ceph setup, using the rados command: First, create a new pool via gui, e.g. I name it test2 with replication 2: Now, run a write test: > rados -p test2 bench 60 write --no-cleanup __ Total writes made: 5742 Write size: 4194304 Bandwidth (MB/sec): 381.573 __ Now, do a read test: > rados -p test2 bench 60 seq __ Total reads made: 5742 Read size:4194304 Bandwidth (MB/sec):974.951 __ Main important parts for performance: - 10Gbit network - at least 4 OSD per node (and at least 3 nodes) - fast SSD for journal > One thing I'm not sure of is OSD placement... if I have two drives per > host dedicated to Ceph (and thus two OSDs), and my pool "size" is 2, > does that mean a single node failure could render some data > unreachable? [Martin Maurer] Size 2 means that you data is stored on at least two nodes. So if you lose one node, your data is still accessible from the others. Take a look on the ceph docs, there is a lot of explanation there. > I've adjusted my "size" to 3 just in case, but I don't > understand how this works. Sheepdog guarantees that multiple copies of > an object won't be stored on the same host for exactly this reason, but > I can't tell what Ceph does. [Martin Maurer] Size=3 will be new default setting for ceph (the change will be with firefly release, afaik) Via the gui you can easily stop and start, add and remove OSDs, so you can see how the cluster behaves in all scenarios. Re: [PVE-User] RAID array performance measuring
> Driver : 1.1-7 (28000) [Martin Maurer] Looks like you run an old kernel. Our current accraid driver in Proxmox VE 3.x is 1.2-1[30200]. (But this seem not related to your issue) Here is the pveperf of a raid10, ext4 (5805Z, with 4 x 2 TB WD-RE4 sata driver): Mount point: /dev/mapper/pve-space /space ext4 rw,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 pveperf /space/ CPU BOGOMIPS: 19152.08 REGEX/SECOND: 902265 HD SIZE: 2608.42 GB (/dev/mapper/pve-space) BUFFERED READS:329.75 MB/sec AVERAGE SEEK TIME: 10.93 ms FSYNCS/SECOND: 4565.44 DNS EXT: 17.07 ms DNS INT: 0.60 ms (..) And the same but 4 x 1 TB WD-RE3 sata drives, also raid 10: pveperf /space/ CPU BOGOMIPS: 8533.38 REGEX/SECOND: 798694 HD SIZE: 821.90 GB (/dev/mapper/pve-space) BUFFERED READS:285.16 MB/sec AVERAGE SEEK TIME: 10.24 ms FSYNCS/SECOND: 3983.72 DNS EXT: 19.44 ms DNS INT: 0.79 ms (..) Re: [PVE-User] Proxmox on DRBD and OCFS2/GFS
Subject: [PVE-User] Proxmox on DRBD and OCFS2/GFS Hi, has anybody tried to use OCFS2 or GFS on top of DRBD for a Proxmox VE setup? What I discovered so far: · OCFS2 is not in the kernel, not built-in and not available as a module. · GFS2 is in the kernel, but depends on cman package. Cman .deb package conflicts with Proxmox .deb packages. Any ideas or experiences with such setups on Proxmox? >From my point of view, this sounds like an ideal thing for a two node setup. Marco [Martin Maurer] OCFS2 packages are not available, due to the policies of Oracle. If you want to try GFS2, you need to install our package, not the one from the Debian repo. Ø apt- get install gfs2-utils BTW, a two nodes is never an ideal setup for HA, due to quorum issue (split-brain). [Martin Maurer] For OpenVZ containers, see http://openvz.org/Performance For KVM, see for example http://www.openvirtualizationalliance.org/ In short, the OS virtualization technology in Proxmox VE is fast. Depending on the benchmark setup, you can show that KVM is faster than commercial solutions and you can show also the opposite, same for OpenVZ. I suggest everybody really interested should test the solutions for their workload and need and then you will see if it fits to your needs. Then go for the best suited product.
