I was recently confronted with exactly the same problem on a brand new
laptop with windows XP. I ended up having to reinstall windows XP to get

How can I increase the resolution of the image that is created when I
save a PNG file? They always come out at 72 dpi. I can of course
increase the effective resolution by increasing the size of the window

Recent versions of PyMOL have the option to write to a higher dpi.
I think the command is something like
ray x_pixels, y_pixels
png filename.png , dpi=600
