[PyMOL] gtk+ gui

2003-12-14 Thread Ben Cornett
I've put together a preliminary Gtk2 replacement for PyMol's usual Tk
interface. Those interested can find screenshots, patches, and
installation instructions at http://www.tuxbox.us

Some things don't work, particularly items under the `File' menu. Most
things are done, however, so I think you could actually use this thing
if you wanted to.

Happy Holidays,

Ben

Thanks for giving it a look.

I'm not much of a graphic artist, so I will probably stay away from
creating any custom button pixmaps. I agree, however, that the ui could
benefit from a little reorganization. For this first pass, I just stuck
with mimicking the layout of the Tk interface, but I'm thinking about
improvements that I might like to make in the future (such as joining
the gtk and rendering windows as you suggest). For now, I just thought
that I would put what I have out there and see if anybody is even
interested in using such a thing.

Swt. Do you plan to make it more GTK/GNOMEish? Like, transforming
the buttons on the right ('Reset', 'Zoom', 'Ray') into GNOME-like
 looking icons for a toolbar?

Would it be possible to include the main rendering window into the GTK+
interface? Perhaps even adsorb the native GUI, too?

 I'll try it out.

Hi,

Thanks. IMHO Gtk2+ opens up a lot of possibilites.
I am currently evaluvating software for GTK based live CD for modern
molecular biology needs. This is a most welcome development for me.

I will be happy to look into this although it is not clear what is meant
by 'Gnome like'.
But internationalisation is something more useful and I should be able
to help straight away. Probably with the missing features too.

Thanks a lot. If you have a plan for what needs doing next please
eloborate.

Also big thanks to PyMol developers.
I found the recent discussions on promoting PyMol very useful.

Best wishes,

Ramanan

Well, GNOME applications have a consistent set of icons for common stuff
like 'save', 'load' 'copy', etc., but also for 'zoom' and stuff like
that.

What would be needed are icons in a similar style for molecular-related
stuff. Like drawing bonds, picking atoms, and so on. Some/much of this
could be shared along ghemical, gchempaint and pymol/gtk (but no work
has been done yet; the custom icons provided by ghemical do not look
GNOMEish at all)

Cool. apt-cach show in Debian suggests you are the maintainer for both
Ghemical and PyMol packages.
Ghemical 1.00-2 is dependent on libgtk1.2 hence looks dead ugly anyway.

gchempaint ... whats that?

But I think I get your point.
IMO we should build on the good looks of Gtk2+ and the unique artistry
of structural biology.
A bit like the stuff at
http://arttech.about.com/library/bl_geis_archives2.htm

If anyone can take a lead on organising the Gtk2+ collection of software
this will be a worthwhile project. Count me in.
There is a Gnome IRC channel for GnomeArt where help should be around.

Best regards,

Ramanan
