the pytable test on the wiki page [1] works fine

As the error indicates, you also need to upgrade your python module
'numexpr' to version 1.3 or greater.
Try easy_install numexpr
Note that, if you get all the required packages installed on os x, you
should just be able to do easy_install tables.
