[issue34325] test_zipfile gets OverflowError in multiple buildbots

2018-08-03 Thread STINNER Victor

STINNER Victor added the comment:

A possible enhancement is to mock os.stat() instead of really modifying the
real filesystem modification time, it would allow to test the bug on any
platform. But I'm not sure that it's worth it, and if anyone is interested, I
would suggest to discuss on bpo-34097.

2018-08-03 Thread Eric V. Smith

Eric V. Smith added the comment:

Actually, this one is probably easier to fix. In my opinion, #34127 is more
important to fix, since it's seen much more often than the message about
abstract base classes.

I wouldn't necessarily object to fixing this one, I just personally think it's
not worth the hassle.

[issue34279] RFC: issue a warning in regrtest when no tests have been executed?

2018-08-03 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy added the comment:

A test file that runs no test functions should pass on the buildbots. (If it
imports the target file, it is not completely empty. And I can think of a use
case for WIP PRs that intentionally do not run anything.)

But I also would like a visually different display, having been fooled more
than once. For one thing, one can omit '(unittest.testCase)' from test class
definitions ;-).

[issue32073] Add copy_directory_metadata parameter to shutil.copytree

2018-08-03 Thread desbma

desbma added the comment:

copy2 always raises "OSError: [Errno 95] Operation not supported" here
https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/9bb6fe52742340f6c92f0dda18599a4577a94e18/Lib/shutil.py#L258
but I can work around that by passing copy_function=shutil.copy to copytree as
I did above.

The problem is that there is currently no way to avoid the copystat call made
on the directory itself.

[issue34273] %f is confusingly associated with fixed point format

2018-08-03 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy added the comment:

The closest anchor is
https://docs.python.org/3.8/library/string.html#format-specification-mini-language.

The table title is "The available presentation types for floating point and
decimal values are:".

This is slightly confusing to me. Does this mean instances of 'float' and
'decimal' classes? or 'floating point numbers (floats and decimals) and
integral numbers, sometimes called decimals since usually written with decimal
digits'?

Within the table, 'number' refers to whatever the title refers to. So I think
adding '(floating point)' would be confusing and wrong, as it excludes
'decimals' whatever they are. On the other hand, changing 'Fixed point' to
'Fixed point notation', in parallel with 'Exponential notation', is correct and
should be helpful.

New submission from Berker Peksag :

import pathlib

TypeError: not all arguments converted during string formatting

While we are relying on duck typing, I think this can be considered as a bug in
this case.

2018-08-03 Thread desbma

desbma added the comment:

Note that in the examples above both copytree calls actually succeed (only
metadata copy failed).

The user can disable file metadata copy by passing 'copy_function=shutil.copy',

call

[issue34321] mmap.mmap() should not necessarily clone the file descriptor

2018-08-03 Thread Josh Rosenberg

Josh Rosenberg added the comment:

Why would it "cause an issue if the file is closed before accessing the mmapped
region"? As shown in your own link, the constructor performs the mmap call
immediately after the descriptor is duplicated, with the GIL held; any race
condition that could close the file before the mmap occurs could equally well
close it before the descriptor is duplicated.

The possible issues aren't tied to accessing the memory (once the mapping has
been performed, the file descriptor can be safely closed in general), but
rather, to the size and resize methods of mmap objects (the former using the fd
to fstat the file, the latter using it to ftruncate the file). As long as you
don't use size/resize, nothing else depends on the file descriptor after
construction has completed. The size method in particular seems like a strange
wart on the API; it returns the total file size, not the size of the mapping
(len(mapping) gets the size of the actual mapping).

[issue34247] PYTHONOPTIMZE ignored in 3.7.0 when using custom launcher

2018-08-03 Thread STINNER Victor

STINNER Victor added the comment:

I first proposed to backport all code from master:
https://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2018-July/154882.html

But I'm not sure that it's a good idea, since I made *many* changes in the
master branch since 3.7... I even added more files, and the _PyCoreConfig API
is going to change anyway...

So I wrote a simpler PR 8659 which backports unit tests, adapt them for Python
3.7, and fix this issue: PYTHONOPTIMIZE and other environment variables and now
read by Py_Initialize(), not only by Py_Main().

[issue34332] Suggestion for a new loop type

2018-08-03 Thread Zachary Ware

Zachary Ware added the comment:

Ideas like this are better sent to the python-id...@python.org mailing list for
discussion rather than immediately opening an issue. Note though that I think
this has a low chance of acceptance; there's a very high bar to clear to add
syntax, even higher for new keywords, and this doesn't seem to buy much over:

   while True:
   try:
   num = int(input("Enter a number: "))
   except ValueError:
   print("I said a *number*")
   else:
   break
print("The square of your number is", num**2)

Especially considering that this version allows you to handle the error however
you want, and handle different errors differently, rather than just silently
restarting the loop no matter the error.

Also, this will be valid in 3.8 and achieve exactly what you're asking for:

while not (ans := input("Enter a number: ")).isnumeric():
   pass
   print("The square of your number is", int(ans) ** 2)

Do feel free to send your idea to python-ideas anyway, I'm just one opinion :)

[issue34256] Python treats ASCII record separator ('\x1e') as a newline

2018-08-03 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy added the comment:

A database record is equivalent to a logical line, possible wrapped onto
multiple physical lines. So it is plausible.

The 7643 in the test name refers to issue #7643, What is a Unicode line break
character?" It contains this:
"
> We may add some words to the documentation for str.splitlines() and
> bytes.splitlines() to explain what is considered a line break character.

For ASCII we should make the list of characters explicit.
For Unicode, we should mention the above definition and give
the table as example list (the Unicode database may add more
such characters in the future).
"
The test was added but the doc not. I agree that it would be useful. Feel
free to suggest a doc change.

[issue34332] Suggestion for a new loop type

2018-08-03 Thread Happy Fakeboulder

New submission from Happy Fakeboulder :

A "while-except" loop, in which it acts like a do-while loop from other
languages, except the condition is "did an exception occur during the execution
of the iteration". One could specify a type of exception at the top, similar to
an except block header. (sorry, I'm an idiot)
Example (the keyword might be different):

# asks for a number until the user gives one properly, then
# calculates the square of it.
whexc ValueError:
num = int(input("Enter a number: "))
print("The square of your number is " + str(num * num)) # assuming whexc works,
this will not cause an error

[issue34253] Tkinter- On windows, calling filedialog or messagebox before the window is drawn causes focus issues

2018-08-03 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy added the comment:

You only need to run .update_idletasks(), as there are no pending events to
process.

This is not a tkinter issue. It is a known fact that there are undocumented
annoying differences in tk behavior on different systems and even different
versions thereof. In #34275, for instance, we had to add .update_idletasks for
IDLE calltips to appear on Macs with recent tk versions.

For Windows, your code also needs entry.focus_set to be able to enter text,
after the mbox is dismissed, without activating the widget with a click.

Indeed, the call is needed here on Mac with Python 3.7.0 and tk 8.6.8. Without
it, the root window partially keeps the focus, in that the traffic lights
remain light, and the messagebox only partially get the focus, in that the
title and OK button are dimmed. One has to click on the box to highlight the
title and OK. With the call, the root lights go out and the box is active, and
can be dismissed with .

There is an additional issue on current Mac. When the mbox is dismissed, focus
does not return properly to the root and entry. They have to be clicked on.
Since this is similar to the problem in #34120, and since Novel's issue on
Windows is exactly like the 'have to go away and come back' part of #34120, I
wonder if the model mbox needs an explicit grab release.

Kevin, since the mbox is created and destroyed within a call to the tk
messageBox function we have no control of its operation. Perhaps you could
check the tcl/tk code and see it if needs updating, as did the IDLE code.

[issue34211] Cygwin build broken due to use of _Type in static declaration in _abc module

2018-08-03 Thread Erik Bray

Erik Bray added the comment:

> What makes functions different from variables? Aren't they essentially just
> pointers?

You're on the right track by noting a difference between functions and data
variables. I can tell you off the bat that when it comes to data imported from
DLLs, non-functions are handled (somewhat by necessity) quite differently from
functions.

That said, since you asked, I struggled to articulate *exactly* why this exact
problem occurs on Cygwin (actually on Windows in general), so I thought about
it for a while and wrote up an explanation in a blog post:
http://iguananaut.net/blog/programming/windows-data-import.html

The TL;DR though is that limitations of how the runtime dynamic loader on
Windows works are such that it's impossible to initialize static data with a
pointer to some data in an external library. The compiler knows this and
prevents you from doing it. The workaround is simple enough for most cases:
Complete the initialization at runtime. In the case of PyType_Type objects,
PyType_Ready can set their base type at runtime just fine.

It seems that now “Date” and “Return-Path” header entries are missing when the
email is generated.

I reverted the initial change. Any updates on the multiple CR problem when
flattening?

[issue34329] Document how to remove a suffix with pathlib.Path.with_suffix

2018-08-03 Thread Stefan Otte

New submission from Stefan Otte :

Hello folks!

I didn't realize that you can remove a suffix with the `with_suffix` function
of the `Path` class of `pathlib` and I always used a little utility function
that I wrote.
I wanted to add that functionality (removing of a suffix) and submit a PR but
then I saw that `with_suffix` has you covered already. I'm just documenting
this feature with the PR I'll submit.

[issue34313] IDLE crashes with Tk-related error on macOS with ActiveTcl 8.6

2018-08-03 Thread Vlad Tudorache

Vlad Tudorache added the comment:

I was telling only that I've seen myself the issues with some Tcl/Tk versions.
As I often build Tcl/Tk on macOS, I can confirm that on 8.6.8 I didn't see
issues (those were effectively present in (ActiveState or not) Tcl 8.5.18,
8.5.19, 8.6.6, 8.6.7. The only issue I had was an @autoreleasepool after
several open/close of the Preferences dialog in IDLE (see the 34120 issue),
related probably to a partial release of resources.

xtreak

in this case, it's an issue on the buildbot cluster, we have to be sure that we
don't have this error again.

and for that, we have to find the origin of the crash on buildbot.

I tend to agree. ISTM that for users, understanding the error message and
