[issue1326830] python scratchpad (IDLE)

2016-02-09 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy added the comment:

I have a tem.py 'scratch' file which I use often enough that it is nearly
always in the recent files list.

On the other hand, many beginners do not think to do that, and Guido has said
recently to design for beginners. In #19042, I propose that there should be an
option to autosave Untitled to .idlerc/untitled.py, without associating the
name with the Window.

[issue21152] Idle: timed autosave for shell (and maybe editor) window

2016-02-09 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy added the comment:

On idledev, Jeff Silverman requested autosave, I presume for editor windows.
If one is doing closely interactive development, hitting F5 to save and run
every few minutes, this would not be necessary. But if not, ... I know that
autosaves in other programs (editors and games) have saved me lots of trouble
more than once.

Saving every n minutes should be trivial using .after. With slightly more
work, it could be every n minute the window is active (has the focus). Any
untimed save should reset the timer. Since IDLE looks at every keystroke (I
believe), counting keystrokes and saving every n keystrokes might be possible.

[issue19042] Idle: add option to autosave 'Untitled' edit window

2016-02-09 Thread Terry J. Reedy

Terry J. Reedy added the comment:

#1326830 ('python scratchpad', rejected) was about same issue, though less
specific about the implementation.

A different solution to the multiline statement problem would be to separate
Shell into the read-only history (with prompts in a sidebar, so normal 4 space
indents would work) and an active mini-editor entry box that would continue to
submit without saving.

I'm ok to only emit the warning is the generator is not exhausted.

The warning would be emited in the destructor if the generator is not

I'm more and more disappointed by this issue... If even a test
stressing int & float is *slower* (or less than 1% faster) with a
patch supposed to optimized them, what's the point? I'm also concerned
by the slow-down for other types (gmpy types).

Maybe we should just close the issue?

Oh wait, I was confused by my own patch for #21955 inlining int operations in
ceval.c.

Since recent benchmarks showed slow-down when ceval.c is modified, I think that
it's ok to modify longobject.c rather than ceval.c (and maybe only
longobject.c, but let's discuss that in issue #21955).

[issue26289] Optimize floor division for ints

2016-02-09 Thread Mark Dickinson

Mark Dickinson added the comment:

Just for the record, there's a less-branchy analog of the floor division code I
suggested for modulo. In Python-land, it looks like this:

def propermod(a, b):
# mimic the C setup
assert a != 0 and b != 0
left = abs(a)
size_a = -1 if a < 0 else 1
right = abs(b)
size_b = -1 if b < 0 else 1

# Compute mod: only one branch needed.
mod = left % right if size_a == size_b else right - 1 - (left - 1) % right
return mod * size_b

# Verify that we get the same results as the regular mod.
for n in range(-100, 100):
if n == 0:
continue
for d in range(-100, 100):
if d == 0:
continue
assert propermod(n, d) == n % d

It may well not have any significant effect here, though.

[issue1767511] SocketServer.DatagramRequestHandler with empty response

2016-02-09 Thread Martin Panter

Martin Panter added the comment:

Sorry that nobody has responded to your patch in almost a decade. :(
Unfortunately in the meantime the test file seems to have been completely
rewritten.

For the original problem, I think it would be better if we just documented that
this is the way it works. Sending an empty response message seems like a
plausible way to acknowledge handling of a request. This parallels the stream
handler only shutting down the connection when the request handler has
finished. Changing this could break compatibility.

Ben: if you’re still interested, can you explain what the problem is on
Windows? My experiments with Wine on Linux suggest that it can send empty UDP
responses fine. Is Windows able to send and receive zero-length UDP messages
with plain sockets? Perhaps this should be a separate bug.

[issue23718] strptime() can produce invalid date with negative year day

julian variable is used to set the tm_yday, which was a minus value, as the

[issue26322] Missing docs for typing.Set

2016-02-09 Thread Guido van Rossum

New submission from Guido van Rossum:

The typing docs don't seem to mention Set (which is a bit of an anomaly, since
it corresponds to builtins.set, not to collections.abc.Set -- the latter is
typing.AbstractSet). Also, AbstractSet is mentioned twice. (And the second
occurrence somehow doesn't have a "paragraph" link.)

All this should be easy to fix.

[issue26318] `io.open(fd, ...).name` returns numeric fd instead of None

2016-02-09 Thread Martin Panter

Martin Panter added the comment:

I agree that the business with “name” is a mess. I don’t know what the best
solution is. FileIO.name is already documented as being a file descriptor in
some cases.

Perhaps we should document that the Buffered and Text wrappers inherit the
wrapped name, but if the underlying object has no “name” attribute then neither
does the wrapper object. E.g.: TextIOWrapper(BufferedReader(BytesIO())).name.
Also document that a string name is more a rough description and may not be
technically accurate, e.g. sys.stdin.buffer.raw.name is always "".

I’m not sure that changing the name to None would be much of an improvement
over having it an integer file descriptor. It would probably hurt debugging and
error messages. IMO it is the APIs like tarfile that are broken when they
assume “name” is a technically valid file name string.

In the tarfile module, there are two uses a file’s “name” attribute that I know
of:

TarFile constructor: Since the main change for Issue 21044 was made, the
TarFile constructor only uses the underlying name attribute if it is str or
bytes.

TarFile.gettarinfo(): See Issue 21996 and my. I proposed some documentation in
Issue 22468 to clarify the behaviour. In one use case, I had to override the
“name” attribute with a dummy “arcname” argument, and then set the real name
later on.

[issue25924] investigate if getaddrinfo(3) on OSX is thread-safe

2016-02-09 Thread A. Jesse Jiryu Davis

A. Jesse Jiryu Davis added the comment:

Martin, here's a third patch, "try 3", which does a runtime version check
instead of compile-time. It's a bit complex, compared to "try 2", which did a
compile-time check instead.

I do NOT think this extra complexity is worth it to support Pythons that are
built on 10.5+ and running on Mac OS 10.4 and older. 10.4 is long obsolete.

I propose merging "try 2" with the compile-time check. If that patch is
accepted, I'll submit a patch for Python 2.7 also.

Thank you!

[issue8013] time.asctime segfaults when given a time in the far future

2016-02-09 Thread Mandar Gokhale

Mandar Gokhale added the comment:

[Strictly speaking, this is actually issue #10563, but that was marked
superseded by the changes for this issue, hence the comment here.]

The 5-digit year still displays an extra newline in Python 2.7.11 (there's
extra whitespace on OSX as well, but that seems to due to the fact that ctime()
returns 30 bytes on OSX instead of the documented 26):

{~}$ /usr/local/bin/python
Python 2.7.11 (default, Jan 22 2016, 08:29:18)
[GCC 4.2.1 Compatible Apple LLVM 7.0.2 (clang-700.1.81)] on darwin
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import time
>>> time.ctime(253402300799)
'Fri Dec 31 23:59:59 '
>>> time.ctime(253402300800)
'Sat Jan  1 00:00:00 1\n'

...and, as far as I can see, the patch hasn't been applied to py2.7 yet
(https://hg.python.org/cpython/file/2.7/Modules/timemodule.c#l579)

Please let me know if I am missing something obvious (I'm pretty new to the
bugtracker), or if this issue is planned not to be fixed for versions < 3.0.

If not, should this issue be reopened, or the py27-specific problem be migrated

[issue25994] File descriptor leaks in os.scandir()

2016-02-09 Thread Martin Panter

Martin Panter added the comment:

About testing that list(iterator) is empty after the iterator is closed, IMO
this is an implementation detail. It would be equally (or more) sensible to
raise an exception, like proposed for “async def” coroutines in Issue 25887. I
suppose the main purpose of those tests is to ensure there is no leakage or
warning, so maybe add some more filterwarnings() checks in those tests instead?

I left some other review comments.

[issue5824] SocketServer.DatagramRequestHandler Broken under Linux

2016-02-09 Thread Martin Panter

Martin Panter added the comment:

It is not that wfile.getvalue() returns None, it is that self.client_address is
None. If the client explicitly binds to a name, then the server gets that name
in the client_address, and then everything seems to work properly for me on
Linux.

On Linux, using strace and an unbound anonymous client, I see that recvfrom()
outputs a zero-length sending address structure, which Python’s makesockaddr()
function converts to None with the comment /* No address -- may be recvfrom()
from known socket */. The man page
 actually says the address
length should be sizeof(sa_family_t) in this case, so maybe that is a minor bug
for Linux or the man page.

How does this work on non-Linux platforms? I’m not really familiar with Unix
domain sockets, especially datagram ones, but it seems to me that the main
confusion is whether DatagramRequestHandler supports anonymous Unix domain
clients or not.

As in Issue 1767511, I think DatagramRequestHandler is designed to always send
a response back to the sender of the request. If you don’t want to send a
response, why are you using this class?

I agree that the approach in "try 2" is fine and the runtime check in "try 3"
is overkill. While it is possible to do so, we've never really supported

FTR the python-dev discussion looks like it is
. The argument for this

I also agree the would make it harder to fix the wakeup polling problem. I
suggest to reject this change.

Also, if you want a method to be overridable in subclasses, I don’t think it

[issue26324] sum() incorrect on negative zeros

2016-02-09 Thread Mark Dickinson

Mark Dickinson added the comment:

For what it's worth, NumPy has exactly the same behaviour:

>>> np.array([-0.0, -0.0]).sum()
0.0

... which is a bit surprising, given that this is a much easier problem to fix
when you know the type of everything in the array in advance.

The Decimal type has similar issues here, resulting from that implicit addition
of 0:

>>> from decimal import Decimal, getcontext
>>> getcontext().prec = 5
>>> x = Decimal('3.1415926535893')
>>> sum([x])
Decimal('3.1416')

Fixing this would involve major changes to the way that sum works, or some
horrible DWIM special-casing; I think it's best left as it is.

[issue26253] tarfile in stream mode always set zlib compression level to 9

2016-02-09 Thread Martin Panter

Martin Panter added the comment:

Actually it’s not really obvious from the signatures, but in the middle of the
tarfile.open() documentation it says “. . . tarfile.open() accepts the keyword
argument _compresslevel_”, so it should already be possible.

Martin Panter added the comment:

For gzip compression, there is also a proposal to change the default: Issue
26253.

Anyway, the patch looks good for now.
