[issue42179] Clarify chaining exceptions in tutorial/errors.rst

2020-11-05 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

I prefer the patch by Inada-san!

>> Describing the default behavior and "from None" is enough for new users

> these special attributes.

Doesn’t feel strange to me: `raise Exc from exc` or `from None` shows how to
use the mecanism, whereas the special attributes are about the implementation.
A tutorial can show how to use language features like for loops or with
statements, but shouldn’t explain how to implement the protocols, that’s too
much detail if you’re just starting to learn programming.

Hi Eric! Are you still interested in this? I notice that the wiki page hasn’t

do you still think that it is more accessible to edits on the wiki rather than

[issue11831] "pydoc -w" causes "no Python documentation found" error when the path is not current directory

pydoc help:

So there is no support for not using the current directory, probably on purpose

should be addressed.

(These days I would be more worried about src directories, which I’ve just

[issue41626] port shebang of tools from python2 to python3

2020-10-21 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

This is a minor thing, and not a particularly visible bug, but it could create
confusion about how to run scripts so could be fixed.

1) For stdlib modules, I think the intended usage is `python3 -m
encodings.rot_13`; I don’t expect anyone to run `python3
/usr/lib/python3.10/encodings/rot_13.py` to do a decoding in the terminal!
So for these easter eggs / hidden gems in the stdlib, I would delete the
shebang and remove the executable bit. There are 18 such modules, ignoring
test, lib2to3, turtledemo and a few others named below.

1.1) There may be some exceptions: for Lib/idlelib/pyshell.py for example,
maybe the IDLE entry point is just a symlink to that file, and removing the
executable bit would break it. So this can’t be a mass update but each case
should be reviewed.

2) Some of the files in the PR are used during development of CPython:
Tools/clinic/clinic.py Python/makeopcodetargets.py Parser/asdl_c.py
Objects/typeslots.py Modules/_sha3/cleanup.py
Lib/ctypes/macholib/fetch_macholib Mac/BuildScript/build-installer.py
I think some of these work with any Python, but some need the locally built
interpreter to give correct results.
It could avoid confusion and mistakes to remove the shebangs and executable
bits from the scripts that need a local Python, and make dure their
documentation mentions `./python path/to/tool`.

2.1) One recent example, Tools/peg_generator/pegen/__main__.py is documented to
work with Python 3.8+, and confusingly is both a __main__ module (to support
python3 -m pegen and an executable script with shebang!)

2.2) In Tools/ssl, we have `/usr/bin/env python3` in make_ssl_data.py and
`./python` in multissltests.py. Are these working?!

3) The files in Tools/scripts are documented as «useful for building Python» or
«generally useful scripts». They nearly all executable and nearly all use
`#!/usr/bin/env python3`, so fixing the few `python` references there seems ok.
 Likewise for Tools/pynche/pynche.

3.1) For Tools/gdb/libpython.py I don’t know how it’s meant to be used; if it’s
not distributed but only for debugging a locally built CPython, then removing
the shebang seems correct.

(Oh and by the way, Tools/scripts/fixps.py is a tool to replace
`/usr/local/bin/python` shebangs with `/usr/bin/env python`… You can judge if
that is useful and/or correct.)

So if things are changed (let’s get a couple opinions here), maybe this needs
separate PRs for 1/2/3, and make sure to get reviews to ensure we don’t break
IDLE / Mac installers / pegen / etc.

FWIW the behaviour in distutils was intended to be controlled by the setup.p

[issue38145] Fix short option 'd' in 'distutils' command 'bdist_dumb'

2020-10-19 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

Thanks for the report and patch, but considering that distutils is mostly
frozen and on its way out of the stdlib, also that bdist_dump is not a format
that’s really suitable for anything (people use sdists and wheels), I am
inclined to close this.

Setuptools maintainers have adopted (copied) distutils to simplify setuptools,
and the bug is present there too, so you could report the bug there:

[issue41381] Google chat handler in Logging module

2020-07-24 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

The difference is that SMTP is a universal, documented, vendor-independent
Internet standard. Google chat products are specific to one company, pose a
maintenance issue (stable Python branches could not accept big changes if the
API changes), and risk becoming obsolete (google released ten text and/or video
chat systems, renamed them, merged them, removed them). So this idea is not
adequate for the standard library perfect for a package on PyPI!

[issue10572] Move test sub-packages to Lib/test

2020-03-15 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

I would advise against this for two reasons:

- git does not track renames, contrart to Mercurial, so every log/diff command
needs to analyse files to determine if something was moved rather than deleted
+ created; the matching can change depending on a command-line param, and git
log needs a --follow option.

- github does not apply --follow, so history for moved files is not useful:
https://github.com/idomic/cpython/commits/bpo-10572-testlibs/Lib/test/tkinter_test/test_tkinter/test_widgets.py
 (for some reason, annotate works:
https://github.com/idomic/cpython/blame/bpo-10572-testlibs/Lib/test/tkinter_test/test_tkinter/test_widgets.py

[issue1812] doctest _load_testfile function -- newline handling seems incorrect

2020-02-12 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

Ah, I got it wrong, get_data itself uses `rb`, not default `r`.
It makes sense given that package data could be any kind of file, not
necessarily text. Too bad there isn’t a `get_text(encoding)` method in the
loader API!

With Python 3’s rich IO system, isn’t there a quick and correct way to get a
text file from a bytes stream? TextIOWrapper?

Éric Araujo added the comment:

Allow me to ask a maybe very naive question:

Wouldn't it be possible to fix the problem at the source, that is, use
`open(filename, "rU")` in the two spots you found rather than doing ad-hoc line

(I get that the second one uses `rb` at the moment, so switching from bytes to
str is not just a one-liner there)

[issue39260] distutils.spawn: find_executable() Fails To Find Many Executables on Windows

2020-01-08 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

The problem is that distutils.spawn.find_executable is an internal API, never
meant for general usage.

Only minimal change happens to distutils these days, partly because the
codebase is full of dark corners and weird interactions (so a fix can easily
break someone else’s setup.py script), partly because few core developers have
the expertise and willingess to write patches or review PRs.

So the question is: is the problem you reported a problem that happens when
people write setup.py scripts, or when using the function for something else?
If it’s the latter, I’m afraid the safe course of action would be to change
nothing, and recommend people use truly general-use functions like shutil.which.

[issue38914] Clarify wording for warning message when checking a package

2019-11-26 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

For your project, if you define maintainer and maintainer-email (with your own
info), it’s too bad that adding author results in a warning for missing
author-email!

The goal of these checks as I understand them is a best effort to encourage
projects to contain contact information (and recognition for the work). It
seems legitimate to know the original author name but not email, and too bad
that the simplest way to avoid the warning is to remove the author info.

I wonder if it would be going too far to change the checks to avoid the warning
if we have author, maintainer and maintainer-email (or even more combinations?
given that email format allows embedding a name directly there)

[issue7951] Should str.format allow negative indexes when used for __getitem__ access?

2019-04-25 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

A side question: where is it defined that in `{thing[0]}`, 0 will be parsed as
an integer?

The PEP shows `{thing[name]}` and mentions that this is not Python but a
smaller mini-language, with `name` always a string, no quotes needed or
permitted.

2019-03-14 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

Hello! Are you seeing this problem when building or installing some package,
or are you using the classes directly?

If it’s the latter, I would recommand you to use
https://pypi.org/project/packaging/ rather than distutils, which is not meant
to be used as a generic library.

[issue35830] building multiple (binary) packages from a single project

2019-01-25 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

The way to achieve this is to make sure your two components live in two
separate directories, each with its setup.py.

This is the simple way that works with distutils/setuptools and pip
install-from-vcs (you can install from a subdir of a repo).

[issue35397] Undeprecate and document urllib.parse.unwrap

2018-12-16 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

I suspect the only reason was that unwrap was caught in the bag of
«undocumented functions (that don‘t seem useful)».

Personally I think I see more bare URLs than URLs in angle brackets these days,
and `URL:` feels like an archaic marker :) But I don’t see any harm in
un-deprecating and documenting the function now that you say you would find it
useful.

[issue35416] Fix potential resource warnings in distutils

2018-12-05 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

I think the places that already use try/finally: close are correct.

We try to minimize churn in distutils; changing to with is nice but does not
fix errors or warning in these cases.

The changes for the few spots that don’t use finally: close are welcome though!

[issue12657] Cannot override JSON encoding of basic type subclasses

2018-11-15 Thread Éric Araujo

Éric Araujo added the comment:

A modern solution for this is to define a singledispatch function (with
implementations for your custom types) and pass it as the `default` parameter
to the dump functions.

(That won’t avoid the custom → dict copy, but that’s how the module works)
