Distutils is now deprecated (see PEP 632) and all tagged issues are being
closed. From now until removal, only release blocking issues will be considered
for distutils.
If this issue does not relate to distutils, please remove the component and

I don't know about 2.5 but:
Reading the MSVCCompiler class code in trunk, I can see a case where __init__
doesn't create self.__root. (if self.__arch != Intel)
making any call to get_msvc_paths() leading to an error.
