That number is not very interesting in itself, since Github indeed makes it easy to submit and integrate small fixes. So you can have many occasional contributors but very few regular contributors keen on tackling non-trivial tasks. It would be more interesting to know how many of those contributors submitted several (for example 5 or more) non-trivial fixes or improvements.
