[Python-Dev] Release blocker with no assignee (now me)

Can someone comment on this ticket? http://bugs.python.org/issue3666 It's marked as a release blocker for 3.0. I added a patch then refined it based on a comment by Christian Heimes. It was unassigned. I just took it and will apply the patch if it gets a thumbs up from another developer.
