Although I believe I've already done so, I've repeatedly said that I have no
problem assigning my changes in python-mode.el to the FSF (again). I think we

transferred `compound-statement-skeletons' from python.el in order to work with
python-mode.el.
It defines "if", "for" etc. as abbrevs, whose expansions are functions
inserting the skeleton.
Remains a strange bug: abbrev-expansion only works after a RET inside the
