 Hi ,

I , Myself Sushmita KaranI am new to this IT software field. I want to
start my career in QA tester/analyst. I am recently doing training in QA
from a institute online...have done manual testing and now automation
 testing tools class going on.

I have learned the testing lifecycle and is familiar with it in bits and
pieces .I am trying hard to understand but without hands on experience am
 finding it difficult.
I want help with writing test cases, identifying the bugs and defect and
how to jot down in spreadsheets. I want to learn from experienced personals
so that i can make my interest of becoming a tester successful.

I have my degree as a Bachelors of Science from India.

I have no prior knowledge of any computer related programmings or work.

Please help me in starting out .

Hello Sushmita,

Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project!

A couple others have pointed you to the Orientation pages on our website:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

This page will help you get signed up for an account on Bugzilla and
help explain the kinds of things the QA team works on. Since you have
prior experience with SQA a lot of this will be familiar.

The QA effort tracks the project's overall lifecycle. Since we just
released Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 a week ago, it is natural that we
focus now on reviewing incoming bugs reports from users. We'll want
to determine, over the next few weeks, whether any new and serious
bugs slipped through into this release. The section called Easy QA
Task: Confirm New Defect Reports on the Orientation page will help
you get started with that.

If you have any questions, please send them to the
qa@openoffice.apache.org mailing list and someone will respond. It
may be a little slow right now, since August is vacation time for many
project volunteers, but it will pick up again in September.

Regards,

-Rob

 Thanks,
 Sushmita.

Hello Victoria, and welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project!

Ah, Cambridge. I used at Lotus Development Corporation, many years
ago, both in Lechmere and Kendall Square. Boca Grande burritos,
yummm... But now I'm out in the 'burbs.

service and open source projects, so I have decide to get involved with the
OpenOffice community. I have been a software tester for about 2 years. I
have particular experience with manual testing, test case writing, and
accessibility standards for software. Although I have mostly been doing
manual testing I know how to use Selenium and I hope to learn jBehave soon.
I have some programming skills in Java, C++ and Python.

Wow, it sounds like you have a great set of skills and experience.
We can always use someone with this kind of background.

What I don't really have experience with is the Open Source Community. I
have been reading through the QA orientation module. I have opened a
Bugzilla account. I am used to working with Jira, but Bugzilla looks fairly
similar so I don't think the learning curve on it should be that steep.

If you are entirely new to open source you might want to review some
of the other orientation pages as well, so you get a feel for how
we're organized and how we make decisions. It is very different from
a hierarchical top-down corporate structure. We're very flat and
self-directed.

Perhaps it would be best for me to start with reviewing some of the bug
reports? Is there a specific procedure for doing that?

We just release Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 last week. So reviewing
incoming bug reports from users, to see if there is anything
surprising (we hope not!) found by them in this release is a good
place to start. You can find details in the Easy QA Task: Confirm
New Defect Reports section of the QA Orientation page.

Regards,

-Rob

I look forward to working with you all.

 Thank you,
  Victoria

I don't see an account in Bugzilla with that name. Did you create an
account? You need to create the account first, then I can add your
ID to the qa-team group.
