lba48 support is not committed yet, read the linux messasge - it says it
cannot use lba48, because the drive (qemu) doesn't support it. Find my
latest posting on this list, it should get you going.

Now I realize my mistake, sorry for the noise :/

To not make this thread completely useless: I find
/usr/share/misc/file/magic very useful to get machine patterns (as
detected by file). Search there for magic for ELF executables and
you will find a fairly complete list of machine magic numbers.

This code is only used when !defined(CONFIG_SOFTMMU), ie. usermode emulation.
The i386 code is a leftover of the now-dead qemu-fast. Presumably the ppc code 
was just copied from these.

[Qemu-devel] [PATCH] Add support for compiling outside the source tree

Hi,

The attached patch adds (or, strictly speaking, fixes, as the source
tree had already initial support for this) support for compiling QEMU
outside the source tree (or in a subdir). As a side effect, it also
removes the requirement to call configure with an absolute path. The
changes are fairly small and don't affect the normal build.

[Qemu-devel] qemu (cvs-version) performance?

Hi,

i'd like to know, what the qemu-project aims at.
Do the authers aim at writing (together with kqemu or qv86) an
alternative to VMWare? (At least in the x86 virtualization case)

I first thought that way and i still hope that, but i was disappointed
by qemu 0.8.0 and the latest version from CVS.

I thought, that qemu-0.8.0's problem would be disk-IO. I installed
Windows 2000 and in the task-manager the CPU-Time is 100% during intense
IO. A dir c:\ /A /S /B NUL: on the console causes 100% CPU-time and
most of it being that red-colored in-kernel-time.

The DMA-mode is active according to the device-manager, since i upgraded
to qemu CVS (version from an hour ago).

So IO still seems to be very expensive. AFAIK, IDE-DMA or BusMastering
should enable the CPU to do other things while waiting for the Interrupt
that signals the finished transfer. (My knowledge about hardware is not
that good though.) But the virtual CPU is not idle and the host's CPU
isn't either.

Of course i'm using kqemu.


So what might be wrong?
Some hints:
- the disk-image(raw format) is on a reiserfs-filesystem
- the host ist kernel 2.6.15


Please don't understand me wrong.
I appreciate your work.

The first 16 bytes only tell you it's an ELF executable. ie. you've just 
removed the bits that tell you whether it's e.g an arm or a ppc executable.

You'll notice that after your patch all the be/le pattern matches are 
identical, which is obviously not going to work.

 A few weeks ago I wrote a qemu daemon manager. It's a pretty simple
 script that manages multiple qemu processes, launching each one in an
 instance of screen. screen does most of the dirty work of keeping

resolution. Again I don't think it's really the problem I'm trying to solve,
maybe I just didn't expressed myself clearly :-)

it fixed the client-server interaction by adding an end of command marker
in the stream sent back. This seems to work well, but I still don't know
if the use of a /tmp/qemu-$$-socket entry point is really acceptable.

Except now you can't load raw kernel images.

I'm still not convinced the boot sector hacks can do anything useful How 
exactly are you using these? You say the DECstation bios uses offsets stored 
in the boot sector to locate the second stage bootloader, but:
a) We aren't using a DECstation bios. I'm guessing we're not emulating 
DECstation hardware, so it wouldn't work even if we did have one.
b) You haven't modified the boot sector to provide those offsets.
c) You're only replacing the boot sector itself. Even if you did insert the 
correct offsets they'd still be pointing to random bits of user data, not the 
kernel you want to boot.

Just an idea: how about using Multicast DNS (see multicastdns.org)?
IIUC it provides a generic way to find services on a net; and it's

After experimenting with the avahi apps a bit, I think mDNS can indeed
advertise several services on the same host with different ports! I ran
avahi-publish -s -H localhost myserver1 _http._tcp 80 in one terminal,
then avahi-publish -s -H localhost myserver2 _http._tcp 12345 in
another terminal. This advertised two HTTP servers which were running on
my local host, on ports 80 and 12345, under the names myserver1 and
myserver2.
avahi-discover then displayed these two services, with their names and
the correct port numbers. And in konqueror, browsing to zeroconf:/
also showed the two WWW servers correctly.

So, this could provide the functionality you were looking for... But it
still has the drawback that zeroconf seems to be quite a big framework,
and it requires multicast DNS in the kernel and such stuff...

There was one that used threads to do IO asychonrously, but iiuc the final
patches (which will use posix? async io) are still being worked on..

The attached patch adds (or, strictly speaking, fixes, as the source
tree had already initial support for this) support for compiling QEMU
outside the source tree (or in a subdir). As a side effect, it also
removes the requirement to call configure with an absolute path. The
changes are fairly small and don't affect the normal build.
