said, I tried back and forth, to no avail. Like I already described, zoom to
layer never worked, and I still believe my earlier observation is true, that
loading multiple layers at once changes the map extent

maybe a silly question, but after a dissolve of a line layer, when using
the split feature function to split the layer, instead of splitting in 2
parts, the tool is splitting in n parts (where n = 113). Apparently the
parts are randomly located.
