My 2c - I really like Mathieu's evolutionary proposal. At the same time
running a contest to see what other ideas we can shake out of the trees
seems like a good idea (just be sure to include Mathieu's proposal too!).

If you are interested in using your own SVG
I have been using my own SVG markers setting them as a subfolder of the
general qgis icons folder.
This solves the problem of opening/saving a shared project between my PC
and the server...
