try looking this up this error in the web...
maybe because in your command you used the emdash character (-) instead
of two dashes (--)

Linux mint 13 maya is based on ubuntu 12.04 LTS and as there are
packages available for 12.04 precise pangolin you should be able to
install QGIS from ubuntugis.
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugis/+archive/ppa
Or you can still compile it by yourself ..

as well, and that's the PPA I use to keep QGIS up to date.
