I have noticed that although Gdalinfo -stats shows the output tif as having
data:
STATISTICS_MAXIMUM=223
STATISTICS_MEAN=-1.4013838186591e+38
STATISTICS_MINIMUM=-3.399521444e+38
STATISTICS_STDDEV=1.6735675394745e+38
When I open it in Qgis it shows
Min -3.4e+38
Max -3.4e+35
I have used this base file:
bio9_49.tif
Driver: GTiff/GeoTIFF
Files: bio9_49.tif
Size is 3600, 3600
Coordinate System is:
GEOGCS["WGS 84",
DATUM["WGS_1984",
SPHEROID["WGS 84",6378137,298.257223563,

(eg. bio9.tif) which have data on land but are blank beyond the coastal margins.
Clipping these in Qgis ('Raster', 'Extraction', 'Clipper') results in a tif

clip files and realign them etc.
Now I have some data from CliMond which is in two formats:
Either as text files
CM10_1975H_Bio01_V1.2.txt
CM10_1975H_Bio15_V1.2.txt
CM10_1975H_Bio29_V1.2.txt
etc

To install the newest version of QGIS I added the QGIS repositories to my
/etc/apt/sources.list file:
sudo leafpad
