My hope was that the error messages recorded in the file qgisout.txt
would help. The project involves many layers, so it will be
a long task finding out if this is caused by any of them. Regarding
the edit tool,
the crash occurs when I try to edit a lines layer, even if I start
one with "New layer

Difficult to say something without knowing the dataset and without knowing
which edit tool you used.
Do you have access to a svn version to see if the problem is still there?
