[Qgis-user] Crowd-Funding Call 2023

2023-01-19 Thread Anita Graser via QGIS-User
Hi everyone,

Some of you may have already seen our crowd-funding call on the official QGIS
blog. I would like to take the initiative to share it through this channel as
well:

QGIS turned 20 last year. We want to ensure another 20+ years of sustainable
development to keep on bringing the most user-friendly GIS to users worldwide.

This year, we, therefore, plan to focus on addressing long-standing
infrastructure debt (particularly docs and web infrastructure). To make this
infrastructure more sustainable, we had to make the difficult decision to move
funds from our annual grant programme to rather support these infrastructure
tasks. To address upcoming challenges (including but not limited to Qt6 support
and next-generation installers) and to the grant programme back to full
strength, we need additional funds. The best way to achieve this goal is to
enlarge our sustaining member base.

Our existing sustaining members contribute €130k per year. We are aiming to
raise an additional €70k per year (equivalent to 1 new flagship, 3 new large, 4
new medium, and 8 new small sustaining memberships) to bring the total member
contributions up to €200k.

The campaign to raise funds for our activities runs from 16th January 2023
until 16th February 2023.

You can find more information and follow our funding progress on:

https://blog.qgis.org/2023/01/16/crowd-funding-call-2023/

Regards,
Anita

[Qgis-user] Offering QGIS installers through Windows store

2022-11-22 Thread Anita Graser via Qgis-user

Hi,

With QGIS functionality and user base constantly growing, the required
maintenance also keeps increasing.
To keep our project budget sustainable, we (the PSC) are considering
investigating the possibility of offering a Windows installers for sale
through the Windows store in addition to the free installers from qgis.org.

This approach would follow the example of projects such as Krita
(https://krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/).
It would give our users an additional low-threshold way to support QGIS.
And - if I understand the Krita offering correctly - users will also get
automatic updates when new versions come out which is a nice service.

Of course, we will keep offering the free installers and using the store
would be completely optional.

If you have any experience offering software through the store, your
insights would be very much appreciated since we are still at the early
stages of exploring this option.

Regards,
Anita

Re: [Qgis-user] [QGIS-Developer] Model for Temporal Measurement (vector) Datasets ?

Hi Richard, Hi Tim,

Here's what I could come up with:
https://anitagraser.com/2022/10/01/visualizing-iot-time-series-with-qgis-mobilitydb/

I think it's promising but lacks GUI support.

Hi Richard

Thanks for clarifying your ideas. Could we not implement something
similar to how WMS-T works in that we have a PostgreSQL-T provider
extension for example that passes a time filter to the underlying data
base request. In another system we are build for a client we have some
logic to fetch min/max/mean/sum/etc from a time slice so we could have
something similar such that each point has only one value for the
current time slice.

Not sure if I make myself clear or not...

MobilityDB has temporal temporal bools, ints, floats, texts, and
geometries: https://docs.mobilitydb.com/MobilityDB/develop/ch03.html

So that would cover the storage question but the visualization issue
remains until we implement support for these types in Temporal
Controller.

Yes, there seems to be no iLike in sqlite:

Quite the contrary. I often have the need to change the starting color to real
white or even transparent.

It's probably one of those cases of "it depends!"

In choropleth maps, it's important to distinguish between non and the lowest
class. However, for heatmaps and similar viz, a smooth transition from white is
often desired.

Conclusion: the starting color should be really easy to change.

[Qgis-user] Map contest: mapping Pi for the 3.14 splash screen

2020-05-14 Thread Anita Graser

Dear QGIS mappers,

As you may have noticed, the next release version will be 3.14 and
therefore, we will call it 'Pi'.

Usually our versions are named for community meeting locations and the
splash screen shows a map related to this location.

For 3.14 we are looking for creative maps that capture the essence of Pi.

All submissions will receive an honorable mention in the release blog post.

The winner will see their map on the release splash screen and banner on
qgis.org.

To participate, please submit your maps at
https://forms.gle/DbLL3BfvwYw33qfJ8

The deadline is 31st May 2020.

Thanks, that's it.

It would be awesome to have some indicator for the existence of this feature.
Maybe an eye icon like in the composer item list?

[Qgis-user] Removing a layer name from the legend

2020-05-08 Thread Anita Graser

Hi,

In previous versions it was possible to remove the layer name by
clicking edit on the legend item and deleting the text, as described in

https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/130625/how-to-remove-layer-names-from-the-print-composer-legend

In master, deleting the text does not delete the layer, the text can be
changed but not removed completely.

Am I missing something?

My use case: Design a 2 column legend for a single categorized layer
with 4 categories. Currently, the left column consists of the layer name
and two categories. The right column contains the remaining two
categories but they are not well aligned with the category entries in
the left column. This is because the items in the right column are
aligned with the top of the layer name. To achieve a nice alignment, I
would usually delete the layer name but now it seems that I can't.

Regards,

Anita

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS in the commercial world

2020-04-14 Thread Anita Graser

Dear Iain,

Yes, QGIS has an entity: QGIS.ORG is the worldwide association of QGIS
users and developers. QGIS.ORG is constituted as a Swiss ‘association’
(https://qgis.org/en/site/getinvolved/governance/charter.html) but it is
not a registered charity.

To help support QGIS, organizations are invited to become sustaining
members of QGIS.ORG. The details of our sustaining membership program
are described in:
https://qgis.org/en/site/getinvolved/governance/sustaining_members/sustaining_members.html

You can also see who's already supporting QGIS:
https://qgis.org/en/site/about/sustaining_members.html

Anita

This observation triggered in me a thought that as the organisation I
work for is moving towards formal use of QGIS throughout its team – we
should be donating to the QGIS project as that would seem to be the
ethical thing to do. The directors would be quite open to the idea.
There are some questions I have.

Is QGIS a registered charity?

Is there an entity which we can donate to?

What would be a suitable donation?

Most business would write off ESRI products through their accounting
system as some form of tax deduction as it is a something you can buy.
A donation to QGIS by business would need to be structures in some way
to obtain a similar benefit.

Has anyone any experience in this area?

Cheers

Good point! I'm also not sure about hiding questions. I guess - in this
case - respondents can chose "other" or not provide any answer and we can
ignore the answer in the evaluations anyway.

The Trajectools plugin provides a "Trajectories form point layer" function
for exactly this purpose.

In addition, Trajectools can add speed and heading information to points,
split trajectories by date, and clip trajectories to a bounding box.

Even in the GRASS GUI itself, trying to v.in.ogr shapefiles from the QGIS

Should I open a ticket for this?

We also ran a user survey on "which plugins you think should be advertised
as “featured” on the official QGIS plugin repository?" in February with the
following results (quoting my email from March):

The answers to the user question of February have now been analyzed. In
total, we received 84 replies to the questionnaire. One submission was
counted as a duplicate. Cases where all three fields were set to the same
plugin have been only counted once. The plugins with more than three
mentions are:

   1. QuickMapServices 33
   2. qgis2web 13
   3. OpenLayers_Plugin 8
   4. Group_Stats 7

Dear users,

The answers to the user question of January have now been published:

Based on these results, during yesterday's PSC meeting, we've been
discussing potential strategies to better inform users about all the
different options for contributing to QGIS. So thanks to everyone who
provided feedback!

We also have a new question for February: Which plugins should be listed as

Based on these results, in today's PSC meeting, we've decided that the 2019

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.2 still very slow to work in Windows 10

2018-12-13 Thread Anita Graser
Hi,

I'm using QGIS on Windows a lot and cannot confirm issues with slow startup
in 3.4. The Windows version is consistently on par with the Linux version.
(Notable exceptions in version 2 were the globe extension and R support
which I couldn't get to work back then.)

The incorrect description of the current node tool behavior unfortunately
slipped by Andrew and me when updating Learning QGIS. We're very sorry
about that. We're working with the publisher to get a correction out.

Dear Bo,

Thank you for your input! The data is most certainly skewed towards power
users. Besides enterprise users, we mostly likely also cannot reach
occasional users and many users in education with these kinds of survey.
Nonetheless, I think if we are aware of the limitation, we can still learn
something from these surveys.

Hi all,

On behalf of the QGIS.ORG project, I'm extremely pleased to announce the
winning proposals for our 2018 QGIS.ORG grant programme. We managed to make
some more funds available to support more than the planned EUR 25,000.
Read all about the successful proposals here:

A number of interesting and useful proposal didn’t make it because of our
limited budget; we encourage organizations to pick up one of their choice
and sponsor it.

Since there doesn't seem to be a tool that covers this functionality, I
implemented one. The PR is here: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/7064

It creates an output layer containing the query result features. My
original plan was to just load a PostGIS layer based on the query but that
didn't work out.

straightforward way to load the query results. Is there another way in
Processing to execute a query and get the results as a layer?

Thanks,
Anita

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS video "commercial"?

2017-07-05 Thread Anita Graser
It would be great to have a video that could be run well at any QGIS booth.
We currently have a lack of good visuals for conference booths. A nice
video would help a lot and compared to physical stuff it does not need to
be shipped around.

Ideally, it should be easy to add and translate subtitles for the video.

Thanks for your initiative!

[Qgis-user] Equivalent for ST_LocateAlong in QGIS expressions

2017-05-31 Thread Anita Graser
Hi,

Is there an equivalent to PostGIS' ST_LocateAlong for QGIS expressions yet?

https://postgis.net/docs/ST_LocateAlong.html

SELECT ST_AsText(the_geom)
FROM
(SELECT ST_LocateAlong(
ST_GeomFromText('MULTILINESTRINGM((1 2 3, 3 4 2, 9 4 3),
(1 2 3, 5 4 5))'),3) As the_geom) As foo;

 st_asewkt
---
 MULTIPOINT M (1 2 3)

We have line_interpolate_point but it does not take measure values into
account:

function line_interpolate_point

Returns the point interpolated by a specified distance along a linestring
geometry.

Thanks and best wishes,

[Qgis-user] QGIS logo material & visual style guide

2017-03-25 Thread Anita Graser
Dear QGIS community,

As you've surely noticed, we've been working hard on a new logo for QGIS:
http://blog.qgis.org/2017/01/08/qgis-3-0-logo-voting-results/

All new logo materials are now published in a handy visual style guide that
provides images and color codes for you to use:
http://qgis.org/en/site/getinvolved/styleguide.html

If you run a user group or create any materials for QGIS-related
activities, please consider using the guidance in this visual style guide.

We will be rolling out the new logo in the months leading up to the QGIS
3.0 release and we are still looking for volunteers to share the effort. If
you are interested in helping with, for example, a new poster, sticker,
brochure, or letterhead design, please get in touch.

[Qgis-user] Add virtual layer equivalent in Processing

2016-12-02 Thread Anita Graser
Hi,

Is there an equivalent to the "add virtual layer" functionality in the
Processing toolbox?

I want to join multiple csv files to a vector layer (and at the same time
build a new geometry WKT). This seems most easily done with a virtual
layer. But I need to script this workflow.

In the Processing toolbox, I only found the "execute SQL" tool but it does
not allow selection of non-spatial tables as input.

I've used that tool in the past, for example to compute street network

Subject: [QGIS-UX] QGIS "Minidump Written to C" Crash Error
To: qgis...@lists.osgeo.org

Hello & SOS!

I recently downloaded the most QGIS Standalone Installer Versin 2.14 (64
bit) for windows.
I am trying to create a map but the program continually crashes no matter
which feature I am using and closes out; showing a "minidump written to C"
error.

The download was successful so I am unsure where the corruption is
occurring; please help!

Thank you!

+1 I also think the after screenshot is more confusing than the before
since the user does not know what enabling the "buffer" checkbox will
actually do. That said, I think it could be useful to allow the user to
select which outputs should be loaded. A group as suggested by Alexandre
could work.

[Qgis-user] Print composer attribute table sorting + max rows gives odd results

2016-05-14 Thread Anita Graser
Hi,

If a user combines sorting + max rows in an attribute table in Print
Composer, the behavior seems to be:

1. apply the max rows
2. sort whatever is left based on the specified attribute

For example, sorting the airports in QGIS sample data by elevation and
limiting the rows to 5 does not show the five airports with lowest
elevation.

This seems very counter-intuitive to me. Is this a known issue?

Commenting out the print statement also gets rid of the error in the

Re: [Qgis-user] 2.5d webmaps with qgis2web

2016-03-10 Thread Anita Graser
Hi,

Openlayers prints:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "C:/Users/anita/.qgis2/python/plugins\qgis2web\utils.py", line 122,
in exportLayers
symbol = layer.rendererV2().symbolForFeature(feat)
TypeError: Qgs25DRenderer.symbolForFeature(QgsFeature, QgsRenderContext):
not enough arguments

... and Leaflet prints:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File
"C:/Users/anita/.qgis2/python/plugins\qgis2web\leafletLayerScripts.py",
line 32, in exportJSONLayer
symbol = i.rendererV2().symbolForFeature(feat)
TypeError: Qgs25DRenderer.symbolForFeature(QgsFeature, QgsRenderContext):
not enough arguments

Reprojected0: 2.5d

... so there is this extra "Reprojected0: 2.5d" in the case Leaflet is
selected.

Best wishes,
Anita

Hi Tom,

Interestingly enough, the new OL3 export seems to work but the Leaflet map
does not show anything and I also cannot locate errors. I recorded you a
screencast which shows what I'm doing: http://youtu.be/xTQ5NoM1_5o?hd=1

Hi Tom,
Sounds great, I updated the plugin and changed to Leaflet, but no 2.5
layers are displayed in the preview. Is there anything else that needs to
be done? (OSGeo4W 2.14 nightly)

[Qgis-user] Importing layers with id column to SpatiaLite

2016-02-14 Thread Anita Graser
Hi,

When importing a layer,. which contains a column called id, into SpatiaLite
with DB Manager, that column contents gets mangled. e.g. this test layer:

id;name;geom
123456789012;asdf;POINT(1 1)
3;lkdl;POINT(1 2)
212455;dksl;POINT(2 2)

will be imported with ids 1, 2, 3 (equal to the row numbers) rather than
the original id values.

The only way to avoid this that I could identify so far, is to rename the
column to e.g. myid as in:

myid;name;geom
123456789012;asdf;POINT(1 1)
3;lkdl;POINT(1 2)
212455;dksl;POINT(2 2)

Then the layer is imported with all three original columns plus an
automatically generated id column.

Imho, there should at least be a warning before the import replaces the
content of an existing id column with row numbers ...

Is this a known issue? Should I open a ticket?

Best wishes,
Anita

In my experience, Difference is much faster than Dissolve. Create a big
polygon around the area containing the buffers. Then run Difference on the
polygon layer and the buffer layer, then run it a second time to get the
desired result.

Can you maybe share the data to reproduce?
