Is there an option in QGIS to add a point by entering its co-ordinates. For
example I have a drill hole position in UTM coordinates and I want to create
a new layer for this drill hole.

Yes - Over on the left side of QGIS at the bottom the layer tool bar
(the one with which you add vector data) is the add delimited text layer
icon (comma). Save your data out as ASCII Text and add away.
Of course - I re-read your question and I don't think there's a tool
like in ArcGIS that
I think there's a tool out in QGIS plug-in land called 'NumericDigitize'
which allows for interactive keyboard entry of coordinates--a single pair,
or many.
