This is normal and expected. The joined part can't be edited, regardless
of the format. The part of the original table can be edited.

please check, if you have rights to write the *.xls in general (e.g. by
opening it using LibreOffice and trying to edit something).

able to join but the problem is I can't edit the details for the resulting
join table for the excl portion of the table. I can edit the fields on the
original shape file but not the fields
