i have tried qgis on linux and found a very strange effect.
I tried to load a europe shapefile file what takes seconds under win/mac
but *minutes* with linux (win same machine, mac compareable).
the linux qgis is the current version available as rpm for SuSE10.3 from this
website.

Every raster in a layer (so you have actually 200 layers)?
Or did you generate a tileindex file using gdaltindex and are you
serving the rasterimages using mapserver?
