Re: [Ql-Users] uqlx-win32

I've put the latest version of uQLx for 32-bit Windows from Phoebus Dokos
onto my website.

You'll need the Cygwin distribution to provide the Linux-like environment:
www.cygwin.com
Be careful, it can be a huge download of 50MB with 6,478 files to install
as I found to my cost...oh to know what I'm doing with Linux and Cygwin
:-((

I never could get the previous versions of uQLx-Win32 working, and I can't
get this one running either unless someone is kind enough to write a step
by step guide for people like me with no knowledge of Linux (keeps
complaining of missing .dll files).

Anyway, it's there for those brave enough to have a go, at
http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/emu/index.html - you can download either a
conventional zipped version or a smaller 7-zip version for people who use
the free 7-zip utility.

Go on, give it a go, then you can tell me what I'm doing wrong...

Should have said that if (unlike me) you alter the references in the Cygwin
installer to 'install' from 'default' to make sure you get the right bits
of

cygwin (ain't these installers wonderful!) you end up with around 512MB of
files, with 36,201 files. Of those, you only need a minimal subset of 6
files...except cygz11-6.dll (listed as a requirement in the uqlx readme
file

for Windows) is not one of them!

Back to the drawing board I think...Only 36,195 files to uninstall!

I've got as far as getting it to announce it's starting uQLx but at that
point it just vanishes.

I think it's because it expects cygz11-6.dll and the distro provides
cygx11-6.dll

So at that point I'm now stuck...until someone shows me where I'm going
wrong! (e.g. I ought to have downloaded the Beta version mentioned on the
website but I don't want to risk downloading another 36,000 files!)

Hi all,
just dropping a line to say that I found some time to fiddle with
uQLx-win32 and although I did not manage to recompile it with the newest
cygwin, I was however perfectly able to boot it properly (again TCP/IP
is not working but I guess after Richard releases the newest version of
the sources it should).

Anyway, in order to properly run it, you should disregard all the cygwin
files that are contained within the archive that is in circulation
(Dilwyn has that too I think). Install cygwin (all you need is base +
X.Org) -
Start a proper bash shell and give "startx".
Now go to your winuqlx directory and after you remove all the XWin
references from the uQLx.bat batch file you will only be left with :

SET DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0
start qm.exe -f .uqlxrc

Save it, run it and there you have it a window will appear within your
X-Windows session with uQLx running Minerva (if you have the standard
distribution)

Cheers,

Phoebus

P.S. Attached is a nice screenshot (kinda big I know but I am sick and
can't/don't feel like making it smaller) :-)

[Ql-Users] JMS is 25!!

2009-05-03 Thread SMSQ

Hi everybody,

just wanted to announce that J-M-S was founded 25 years ago
(2nd of May 1984) and has survived for 25 years now!!

What a great time it was. I remember many events, starting from
early QL shows in Munich (Gaden), or Bielefeld, for example,
Austrian events in Heidenreichstein, Paris, UK events all over the
country, many US events, Italian ones, Dutch ... early events did not
take place at Eindhoven ... and much, much more.

Slight problem: I feel it should not be *me* writing about JMS, so
maybe I could ask for some short stories about JMS - from your side.
For the next QL Today. Which means, I need them soon. :-)

Talking about QL Today. Thanks to all who renewed already. This is very
encouraging!
For those who missed the early renewal deadline: if you renew within the
next week (with Bruce or me), we will still accept the old price.
For UK, subscribers, this is only £25.50 ... Bruce has just updated his
website: http://www.ql-qvd.com/products.html
Subscription form, via letter, fax, or no form and email work as well :-)
Take this as a little celebration gift.
Of course, this applies to renewals AND new subscribers.
So, very final deadline: 10th of May.

For readers with auto-renewal (especially German ones with direct
debit): you will benefit from the reduced early-renewal price, although
I have not charged the account yet (did not mention this on the form).

I am a bit in a rush at the moment - so more offers will follow later,
and through the website and the magazine, so that everybody will be able
to see them, not just list subscribers.

I don't know what will happen in the next 25 years, but I am happy to
look forward to them ... but let's deal with issue 4 of Volume 13 first
(material is always welcome!!) and then go together for Volume 14!

All the best, Jochen
