And I just did some more testing. Executed fine from a 1.4M floppy
image. Copied all the files from a floppy image to ram1_ with no
issues. I even tried to write to the floppy image and that, of course,
failed. Message was "write protected."

Ah yes, contrary to the documentation (I'll amend this) SMSQmulator
should handle 1.44 MiB disk images

Writing to the images will always fail. This is a read access only.

So far, so good. It seems that the DATE problem has been dealt with.

I have tried it with internet locked and virus scanner off.
I removed Java 6 and updated Java to 7.11, booting in mode 32 is faster
than mode 4 but still time enough to pour myself a cup of Java. It
doesn't make a lot of difference.
Sometimes when nothing else is going on in my SMSQmulator this clock
runs quite normal (move every sec.) but for no apparent reason it
freezes for 15 secs or more. Anything else is still to slow to be
practical.

Could you check something for me?
Go to Config -> "blinking cursor pause" and set this to 0.

Does that make any difference? (It shoudln't, at least not when booting).

Alternatively, do you have any other program that could make your
machine run flat out?

Does this slow down after a few minutes, too?

Apart from my Opera browser nothing else is running.
With firewall and anti-virus shut down not even that.
Zero, 100, 200, it doesn't make much difference.
After quiting SMSQmulator the processor drops to below 15%.

Another command that is missing is WIN_REMV which I use to share qxl.win
drives between QPC's, I now have to kill any QPC to let SMSQmulator
access the same drives.

Yes, that is by design. You can always unset the QXL file in the Config
menu, which will release that QXL.WIN file.

Not a big problem but as it is so slow on my system I had to make
adjustments to the boot file from QPC which locks the qxl.win for
SMSQmulator, so has to be killed before each new try.

The cursor is gone most of the time, making typing very difficult.
Writing one line in a Qpac2 Files menu takes 4 to 10 secs.
Placing the pointer is hit & mis, move in small steps and wait to see
where it lands, if at all.

Writing this email while SMSQmulator is booting in the background,
response seems a bit slower, the cursor blinking is definitly, but still
quite acceptable.

John

The keyboard functions correctly in absolutely every piece of software I
have, except QPC2. All locales, keyboard language, regions, etc are set to
UK. QEmulator works and so does SMSQmulator giving the correct keys. QPC2
just does not respond to some keys and unfortunately, that includes # and _
which are needed quite a bit. Yes, I can get around it using ALTKEY and
Clavier, etc but you can't just type, you always have to remember to do
something special and that's a pain when it is such important keys for
SBASIC use. Still, I can now happily work in SMSQmulator so QPC2 will
probably be put aside when I want to code.

Ah, thank you. Floopy is simple enough even for me :o)
And cheap enough for me too (Freeware!)
I tested it with a USB floppy as drive A: on my Windows 7 64-bit PC and it
successfully if slowly created a disk image of a HD QL disk in about 10
minutes. It won't handle 720KB QL disks (it recognised it as such), only
1.4 MB ones on this system at least. Probably because Win7 doesn't handle
720K disks.
I should also have mentioned that the SMSQmulator manual states that
currently only 720K (DSDD) QL disk images can be handled by SMSQmulator, not
the 1.44MB HD disk images.
