Re: [Ql-Users] PC issues

2014-10-10 Thread Dilwyn Jones
I tried a SMART hard disk checker last night, that also indicated no
problem, so at least all the tests done on the hard disk indicate no
problems there, and the only events of note in the event lists seem to be
the puzzling ones of why the backups have beeb failing at weekends (I'll
know to look at that this weekend to try to see what's going on).

The fact that the problem suddenyl disappeared yesterday means (since the
only thing different was the PC being powered down the night before because
of the storm) it must have been something running which normally runs
overnight. Unlikely to have been an update since there was no prompt (I set
everything that updates if I can not to update automatically without asking
me for fear of getting caught out by crapware toolbar installations by Adobe
updates etc), so the favourite has to be the anti-virus running most of the
day after missing its nightly run. I left the PC on last night, and there's
no problem this morning.

I'll try the sfc later, since that will require the PC to be restarted to
command prompt as it won't run in a cmd box window.

Thanks again to everyone who tried to help yesterday!

Strange...

Could be a hardware issue.

Another suggestion is that a software has a problem with some windows
components.

Try checking the System files using the command prompt:

sfc /scannow

And it is a very good idea to check the event log entries.

attracting an international group of QL-ers.

the USA, Finland, Switzerland and, of course, the UK.

I think we can boast of having the first truly international QL event to be

Again a reminder. We are asking people who are likely to attend, and have not

made a decision to expand into a second hall, the Lennon Room, where we shall
 probably hold the presentations.

The Dinner information page is on Geoff Wicks's site -
http://www.gwicks.net/qlis30dinner.htm

Holiday Inn, 132 Corstorphine Road, Edinburgh, EH12 6UA. - there is a link
to Google maps from Geoff's page. The page says function room open from 7pm.

I assume that if there are any last minute changes (I haven't heard of any)
