Re: [Ql-Users] Asus EeePc Benchmarks

Hi Per,

Stock speed of the EEE PC is 630 Mhz as Asus decide to downgrade bus speed to
70 Mhz instead it's nominal
100 MHz speed.

This can be tweaking by overclocking as I've do it under Windows.

But there is some problems doing this :
- Battery life is incredible less (about half an hour)
- Temperature of the EEC PC goes from 45°C to 55°C

Your bench is interesting...

Cheers,

Jimmy.

Thanks. Id be interested to hear about the modifications you made..

I will test QL2K too, but Ive run out of time for now.

Hi Fabrizio and anyone else whove tried the Asus EeePc. Is it any good?
Can you happily run a QL emulator on it (particularly QPC2)? My notebook
has to be retired a year or so early due to a cracked hinge and I need
to find a temporary replacement.

Not tested under linux (uqlx) or qpc under wine.

This piece of hardware is really value added for what provide respect to the

Per,
I got one - Nice little beast.
Mine is running uqlx and linux, at the moment, so I have no experience
with QPC2 on it - uqlx runs fine, though.
What you should have is:

* tiny fingers
* sharp eyesight

as both keyboard and screeen are really, really small. uqlx at 800x480
gives on-screen characters 3-4 mm high - So you should be used to read
the small print. If you are a 10-finger touch-typist, forget the eeePC -
you won't fit them on the keyboard all together.
It's fast enough for serious work and small enough to carry it
everywhere. Got 3 free USB ports, so easy to expand. But you need to get
used to the small scale.

Evening all,

 What you should have is:

I'm pretty sure a new bigger model is coming 'soon' - which is
apparently not 'soon' as in Sinclair speak - with more memory, more
storage and a bigger screen.

Because it comes with Linux installed it has been quite a popular
subject in the Linux magazines, everyone loves it, says how great it is
except for the small screen and keyboard. I note however from the
Asus.com web site that Windows XP is now available as an optional OS.
Not Vista then! :-)

Cheers,
Norman.

For the sole purpose of running an emulated QL, I don't really see a big
advantage in a larger screen: The resolution will be bigger - but the
screen won't be - at least not much. This ends you up with even smaller
physical pixels - And a QL font is still 6x9, that means the characters
will be even harder to read (uqlx cannot scale the QL screen like you
can do with QPC)
Regarding memory, I have invested in a cheap 8GB SD card that gives me
more than enough headroom and added a 2Gig RAM chip.
I use the eeePC for internet connectivity and QLing while travelling.
It's fine for that, because it even fits in light luggage and you can
carry it everywhere. But I'm still happy with my home laptop with
large screen and normal keyboard which is fine if you don't need to
carry it.

Cheers
Tobias

Re: [Ql-Users] Asus EeePc

2008-04-08 Thread QL2K
Hi,

I have an EEE PC, and I make run it run QL2K on a heavy modded EEE PC.
This is sure that EEE PC is very little but as I choose a black model,
something on it recall me the ZX81 ;-)
We have made some modification on QL2K to be more suitable with its particular
screen resolution 800x480 in GDI mode.
DirectDraw mode already works perfectly.
This will be available in the next release of QL2K (which is under validation).
We will release sound emulation too
which can play a SuperBasic command like BEEP 5,100 ;-)

We have made important mods on the EEE PC 4G by :
- Adding a touchscreen,
- Adding a Bluetooth screen internally,
- Adding 2 internal 32 GB USB keys,
- Adding a very small USB HUB inside,
- Installing MS Windows XP and ESET Antivirus.

In this case we are very very far of its initial low price.

But I've not done this only for QL2K but for my activity : as an ultra light PC
is very usefull. (We're thinking to add
a 3G+ key or something equivalent). So for activities like training,
maintenance, commercial this may be a good solution
if you are agree to break ASUS warranty...

As we develop an pseudo-KVM I'm plan to use it as a remote controller of my
Media Center.

I just try QPC2 and it works very well both in windows or full screen mode.

I was very surprise by its performance. It build on a celeron base but by
tweaking it a little (putting it's FSB à 100
MHz instead of its original 70 MHz) it's reactivity it very acceptable and you
can play at TrackMania Nations without
any problem (still on Windows).

I have used a little it's original OS called Xandros (derivate of Debian
Distribution). It work correctly but I still
need Windows for the moment.

Now it's sure that releasing QL2K under Unix it's a too heavy work for me.

Finally I don't recommand the EEE PC for a daily use as Norman say it. It is
just fun to use it.

Cheers,

Jimmy.
