[Ql-Users] Last Chance Saloon

2013-05-24 Thread Geoff Wicks
Just a reminder that next week is your very last chance to write for QL Today.

The deadline for the last issue in next Friday 31st May.

Although we shall not be publishing the issue until September, we are sticking
to our normal production schedule. This gives us the time to scan volumes 16
and 17 and prepare the CDs/DVDs for every reader,

Best Wishes,

I can offer space on my server, which is now in a data centre so has all

You would be able to use all the normal scripting languages (php, perl,
python, mysql).

I don't have time to download anything for a few days (health,
doctor,
hospital probably). Why not put everything on a CD or allow
someone

(Dilwyn?) to put your software on his website?

Hope your decision isn't final and thanks for all you have done
for the

QL.
François Van Emelen

I have downloaded all his programs, just in case.

Most of them are on my website already, I just need to check
they're up to

date.

It looks like Geoff's Lycos pages are still there, for the time
being - the
Lycos Europe home page says 28/2/09 although some services have
already

gone.

They recommend that users who have sites hosted on Lycos change to
their
European partner STRATO, but this is not a free service, it costs
from £1.99

a month.

However, they also suggest Tripod, which is free and up to 1GB
space with
unlimited (albeit subject to fair use policy) traffic. Tripod
seems to be a

"sister" organisation to Lycos - http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/

Oops, I forgot to mention that although Lycos send you to the Tripod home

redirect you back in a loop to the Lycos home page which says all web

The Just Words! website is due to close in a weeks time.

This is sad news.

The site host, Lycos, is cutting out all unprofitable activities, and although
they promised site hosting would remain until at least the end of March they
have now brought the closure forward to 15th February.

I have been investigating alternative hosts with the intention of making the
site a little more professional and until this weekend was intending to
relaunch the site as soon as possible. I am now having serious second thoughts
and may keep the site permanently closed.

Rewriting the site for a new host will be a time consuming task given the numerous links that have to be changed and I have to consider whether the usage of the site - 9 people per week - justifies this time investment.

QL activities take up much of my time that could be devoted to other things. In particular I have a number of family history projects that are on permanent hold. I have still not kept a promise to a niece that I made 3 years ago.

It is very tempting to abandon the QL to be able to spend more time on family
history. The last time I wrote anything for one of the family history magazines
I was paid generously for my work. The article produced a large number of
reactions including one from a distant relative I had never heard of before and
who had masses of family photos. In return she got a mass of detail from me
that peviously she had known nothing about. The QL prevents from doing more
work like this.

If you want something from the Just Words! website, download it in the next 7

You would be very welcome to host it on my server - for free.

Pity you have not used relative links though.
It should be a simple job to run a script to change the links. If you
have say 'http://oldisp/your_directory/' then removal of
the absolute link is dead easy. I can do that for you. All links
would be from the root of the site, but that is not a problem.

I did it recently for my school old boys soc, and had no problems.

I can also offer most script languages, including php with admin via
phpadmin web interface.

Best to buy a domain - justwords.org.uk is available and costs about
£3 a year. You could then use that domain also as an email address.

DNS can then point to the *real* site transparently.

Oh yes - and if you got this way, use 123-reg.co.uk. They are one of
the cheapest, and I know how to get around their DNS quirks, and also
give you http://justwords.org.uk - ie works without the www.
