The QL was quite the reverse - it was so trouble-prone it *demanded* tinkering at every level. That is what made (and makes) it so attractive, and gave Quanta its name - Isn't QL Users and Tinkerers Assocation?
The group's name was originally IQLUG (Indepent QL Users Group) and QUANTA was the name of the magazine. Then at some point Leon Heller decided that IQLUG was too difficult to pronounce and the group's name got changed to that of the magazine - for which he invented "the somewhat contrived acronym" (as he put it at the time), standing for QL Users And Tinkerers Association. Needless to say, the term "tinkerers" stuck and became one of the keywords you might associate with Quanta.
