2011-10-23 Thread Lee Privett
I seem to remember awhile ago Dilwyn asking about the first use of term S*BASIC
was used.

If it is any help, reading Vol 5 Issue 4 Nov/Dec 2000 there is an article
written by DJ and GG re:Turbo Compiler

I quote in the first paragraph Note: ln this article I will use the expression
S*Basic to refer to
both SuperBASlC (QDOS) SBASIC (SMSQ/E)

I _think_ that the term was first used by Norman Dunbar to refer to either
SuperBASIC or SBASIC, but don't know in what context it was used.

No doubt Norman will soon pu tme in my place as usual ;-)

Evening all,

I _think_ that the term was first used by Norman Dunbar to refer to
either SuperBASIC or SBASIC, but don't know in what context it was used.
Did I? I was first (as far as I remember) to use the term QDOSMSQ but
S*Basic wasn't one of mine - I don't think.

Sorry, not this time - I can't remember!

Cheers,
Norm.

The first reference I can find in the ql-users' archive is a mail I
wrote 24/04/98. It said:

Sorry about that cock-up with the prog containing then CHAN_W%, etc
keywords. Or to quote Tony Firshman (:-)#..

S(uper)BASIC, (or S*BASIC as someone said the other day) is extendible, ie,
you can add to the language using machine code (and indeed S*BASIC itself,
...

ie referring to someone else having having used that term shortly before. But
who?

BTW Im not entirely sure I sent that mail! The first sure-fire reference I can find is in a
mail entitled Re: [ql-users] Upgrade path - overview distant future sent by
me on 06/09/98, but then my collected ql-users mailings dont reach back further due to some
long-forgotten calamity.

Can anyone remember who originally coined the term S*BASIC to cover
both SBASIC and SuperBASIC? I remember I first heard it during my
tenure as editor of QL Today, but I can't remember who started it.
