hello

there is a annoying bug in the screen handling with UQLX 2018(a)
it only manifests if zoom is to 2 eg ./qm -z 2

when using pointer programs like QPC2 Files and QD
the cursor jumps to the middle of the upper left corner

the versions 2012 and 2017 are ok
but the sources of 2017 are no longer on github

any solutions ?

Hi Peter,

When you say the TCP/IP socket interface is mirrored in an emulator, is 
that full range of TCP/IP ports.


This would make life easier for porting over existing Internet software.

The demonstration of the TCP/IP at the QLis30 in Edinburgh, is the 
TCP/IP stack the full implementation?

Thank you. Just for clairifcation: There is no TCP/IP stack included
with any of these emulators. They are just mirroring the socket
interface of the host computer to the emulated side.

I've created a new page in the Documents part of my website, dedicated to 
information about the TCP/IP stack included with emulators such as QPC2, uQLx, 
SMSQmulator and QemuLator.

Personally, I found it hard to come across the information and examples of how 
to use the facilities from QL BASIC, so after a frustrating few days when I 
just couldn't find the information to get even the most basic example working, 
I decided to do something about it myself.

The documents include Richard Zidlicky and Jonathan Hudson's original pages 
about uQLx (now that Graeme Gregory is pushing ahead with the 2017 update of 
uQLx for Linux/ARM systems I realised the documentation might be welcome) and 
the TCP/IP stack originally implemented on uQLx.

I've included a document of mine showing how to use the TCP/IP stack from BASIC 
to download html pages and read email headers, for example. The document 
includes example BASIC listings.

There are also links to documents and software from Martin Head, including to 
his IPbasic software package designed to simplify and enhance the use of the 
networking facilities, plus a glossary of networking terminology.

I hope this helps generate some interest in the use of the facilities the 
emulator authors worked so hard to bring us, yet so few people seem to have 
used.

F2 in QDOS or F1,F2,F3,F4 in Minerva.

I do not like the red screen that starts up can did this be disabled.

But How do I enable the Minerva F1-F4 Prompt, to enable the second?

The point might be 32 bit, not so much how recent. In 2013 there were
already the problems with 64 bit for some time.

Hi QLers,

the only three Linux machines I own are my NAS, a SubNotebook and my
Raspberry Pi. While the NAS has its job to do, the SubNotebook gets dust on
a shelf, the Raspi gets at least fired up whenever I want to test a new
version of QL/E.

At work the situation is completely different, at least at the moment. We
are ramping up some new point-of-sales computers (3 series with the
following platforms: BayTrail, Haswell, Skylake) and are making sure the
retail applications work smoothly under both Windows and Linux. While the
Windows world is easy for me, Linux is still a bit of a mystery. Don't get
me wrong, installing a Linux distribution is most of the time trouble-free,
installing professional packages such as Java or device drivers for receipt
printers, barcode scanners, etc. is also easy and works most of the time. My
personal Unix/Linux know-how is somehow limited, but I'm save on the
desktops and with graphical dialogs plus I know some basic shell commands
and the purpose of some folders.

Installing and running SMSQmulator under Linux is trouble-free, I just unzip
the QL/E distribution and start it using the shell command "java -jar
entire_path_to_jar_file".

But even I wrote the step-by-step installation guide for uQLx ARM for the
Raspberry Pi, I constantly fail to install and run uQLx on Intel based Linux
systems. IIRC the last time I succeeded was about 12 years ago at a Swiss QL
workshop where Jon Dent and Markus Dettwiler were giving me a helping hand.

HW platforms, recent 32-bit or 64-bit Linux distributions). I one says one
or the other uQLx distribution works could he or she provide an

as part of a switch statement.  If your processor is a big endian one, 
the code should work; however, if it is little endian (like the x86 
processors), then the tests will definitely fail - changing them to 
'AW', '5A' and '5B' should fix the working, but not the warnings.

ARM is, is far as I know, bi-endian.

No, the code is correct and does work (would be somewhat silly if a
central piece like this didn't work on PCs, the platform most people
use for uQLx). Check the RW macro definiton.

I have some slightly modified code, and have included my working notes 
below, a few tips though, use a version 3.x of the gcc compiler thats the only 
way i get non segfaulting binaries, before u compile export/setenv (depending 
on your shell) CC=gcc-3.x.x -m32, most versions of linux i know still 
support some version of the 3.x compiler. The -m32 flag is also a must I 
cannot get a stable 64bit binary. My compiled qm, qltools and qxltool all work 
perfectly compiled as 32bit binaries under my gcc3.3.6 on my Mandriva 2010.2 
64bit OS. I included a tarball of the source i use but it was too big for the 
QL mailing list, can send it direct to your email if u like, otherwise if u 
know where i can upload it i can do that :)

available source for uQLX at sourceforge?  I've pulled that down and
built for x64 ubuntu with GCC 4.  I've fixed some trivial compilation
issues as I went, but haven't spent more than 1 hour doing this --
ending up with a non-working build (SEGFAULT partway after startup).
Has anyone done any recent compilation of uQLX?

Ultimately, I'd like to prepare debian packages for x86, x64, and ARM
distributions.

It should be possible to install a version of Linux with UQLX on an USB stick  
so it either starts up with an icon so UQLX starts in Minerva with a 
reasonable size screen or boots up directly in that form.

For ease of use the TK2 toolkit should be patched so that you can Lrespr at 
any time.

That would most likely be QT - in my opinion of course, other opinions
are available - but may be wrong! ;-)

don't know about Cygwin environment.


As only 6 files are needed, surely it would make more sense to just

megabytes just to get 6 files to get a single emulator running?

tougher I'd think...

I will try this weekend to make a step-by-step tutorial

Ok, Cygwin as far as I remember gives you the opportunity to do a
download only and to save the files in a given location. That is the
best option. It doesn't install anything.

I'm assuming you have downloaded everything under the sun as you have so
many files to delete (simply go into the C drive and delete (shift
delete) the cygwin directory - that's about the easiest way to delete it.)

You should have only selected the stuff you need but that's half the
problem. Unless the UQLX files mention the bits of Cygwin that you need
- how do you know?

Off the top of my head, you probably need the C and/or C++ development 
runtime files plus the base system and all of X (or XORG these days?).

You need the development stuff to compile UQLX and the X/XORG files to
run it in a graphical environment.

Sorry I'm unable to help any further - I'm 100% Linux!

Ok, I'll try again!

Once downloaded, yo can then run the installer again and tell it (but it
should know) to do an install from a local repository. This way, if it
messes up, you simply uninstall and then run the installer again. You
don't need to be connected to the internet and if you are still on a
dial-up link, it doesn't have to download everything again.

That's how I used to do it years ago. I'd try it out at work and confirm
all this, but our system is well tied down and we can't even connect to
Cygwin these days - anything that hasn't been approved is unreachable.

In fact if you look back two months I posted messages when I tried again, 
within Linux itself and failed with even more difficult problems. Looks 
like my only choice now is to try running a Windows based emulator within 
Wine.

I only went by what google threw up when I searched for cygz11-6.dll

The closest I got was to install the whole lot of Cygwin. All 3GB of it, 
about 182,000 files.


Using that (I thought I may as well use it as I'd only got it by making a 
mistake with the installer) I got as far as getting a uQLx-win startup for a 
couple of seconds before it just vanished.


At that point I gave up. And spent ages uninstalling the whole lot. So much 
for uninstall, it left nearly 2,000 files and didn't remove entries from the 
start menu.


I think I'll stick to QPC2...At least Marcel made Windows easy for us ;-)

uQLx-win32 and although I did not manage to recompile it with the newest
cygwin, I was however perfectly able to boot it properly (again TCP/IP

Anyway, in order to properly run it, you should disregard all the cygwin
files that are contained within the archive that is in circulation
(Dilwyn has that too I think). Install cygwin (all you need is base +
X.Org) -
Start a proper bash shell and give startx.
Now go to your winuqlx directory and after you remove all the XWin
references from the uQLx.bat batch file you will only be left with :

SET DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0
start qm.exe -f .uqlxrc

Save it, run it and there you have it a window will appear within your
X-Windows session with uQLx running Minerva (if you have the standard
distribution)

Should have said that if (unlike me) you alter the references in the Cygwin
installer to 'install' from 'default' to make sure you get the right bits 
of

cygwin (ain't these installers wonderful!) you end up with around 512MB of
files, with 36,201 files. Of those, you only need a minimal subset of 6
files...except cygz11-6.dll (listed as a requirement in the uqlx readme 
file

for Windows) is not one of them!

Back to the drawing board I think...Only 36,195 files to uninstall!

I've got as far as getting it to announce it's starting uQLx but at that
point it just vanishes.

I think it's because it expects cygz11-6.dll and the distro provides
cygx11-6.dll

So at that point I'm now stuck...until someone shows me where I'm going
wrong! (e.g. I ought to have downloaded the Beta version mentioned on the 
website but I don't want to risk downloading another 36,000 files!)

update the Mac version of uQLx if he can possibly get hold of the 
sources. We have the emulator itself, but the current version only

Works fine on Mandriva LE2005. The version I installed from scratch 
(after much trouble and reinstalling the old c compiler from mandrake 
8.2) needs X to work with 16 bits to get the right colours. This version 
worked fine with X set to 24/32 bit colour.

For the whole 10 people who want this, 3 if which are prepared to pay
for it? Sure, I'm right on it ;-)

Wine is getting better by the day, I'd say I just wait some more and
have Linux compatibility for free ;-)

Besides, one can see what happens on Linux. Many people don't seem to
be able to get uQLx to run, neither in source code nor in binary form!
Windows as a platform is bad enough as it is, I'm not longing for
another quagmire ;-)

just gave the error message segmentation fault. It looks as if I shall

 Version 10/22/02 seems to compile and work out of the box on my Gentoo
 system (gcc 3.3.6, Xorg X11 6.8.2).

This is the error message I always get with gcc3.0:

QL_files.c:1005: error: conflicting types for `WriteMdvControl'
QL68000.h:430: error: previous declaration of `WriteMdvControl'
make: *** [QL_files.o] Error 1

This is on Suse 9.3/10.0, gcc 3.3.5/4.0.1, Xorg 6.8.2, uqlx 22/10/02

Getting this to work is beyond my limited 'c' skills..

Strange. Perhaps try removing REGP1 in line 430 of QL68000.h

That produced a number of similar error messages, after removing 'regp1'
 from the reported lines it will compile but not run:

The only result was was a 90KB error log! I know there are people out
there using UQLX, so what am I doing wrong? I tried to email the author,

I compiled it under Slackware 10.1 and gcc 3.3.4 without any problem.
I am not sure that I have the standard distribution of uqlx, if I remember 
well Richard sent me an updated one some time ago.
If you want I can send you the qm bin file by mail.

 I didn't have any problems until I switched from distributions using
 Xfree86 to more recent ones that use Xorg.


I had the same problems, however I did manage to fix them (together with  
compilation in post 4.x FreeBSD). I will have to dig up my makefile and  
see what I did

extension) look so fetching, though, that I too didn't notice the

for compilation.
One of the worse problems I had recompiling uQLx for win32 was to secure  
a non-broken version of gcc for cygwin! The main reason why TCP/IP is  
not currently working is that and only that :-(

has anyone managed to compile a working UQLX for MacOS 10.3 (Panther)? I 
failed with several combinations of GCC (Apple's 2.95-2, 3.1, 3.3; GNU's 
3.4) and Sources (Web; latest from RZ). My setup is a Powerbook G4 1.25 
GHz, MacOS 10.3.4. UQLX compiles, but crashes with register dump at 
runtime. Surely RZ would fix this if I continue to bother him (I'm already 
generating MB's of debug output), but maybe someone else has already solved it?

To Phoebus: The MacOS X version of UQLX from your site crashes, too. On 
which machine have you tried it (if any)?

That was compiled by James Weatherly as I have no Apple here (yet ;-) . I  
will have to contact him.

It was compiled on 10.1. The register dump crash though reminds me of  
something. I will have to look at my correspondence between J.W, R.Z and  
myself on the subject.
