[ql-users] Newbie with some questions...
Hi and good morning everybody, my name is Alex, coming from Germany and just found my old QL in the cellar... after blowing the dust off the keys I recognized it again. How cool it looks... still one of the most beautiful devices I've even seen. When I bought it in 1989, I was fascinated by this machine, but in this pre-internet-time I was not able to make some contacts to get some news or software. So now, I fell somehow "retro" and want to make a new start. I already looked through the net and found a lot of unsorted infos, most of it too complicated for me to understand. I'm not interested in excessive hardware expansion. I just want to learn to code this machine, because I think there's a lot of things possible with the standard capabilities... And of course, I want the feeling. So here come my questions: - Is there a way to get software from the net onto microdrive cartridges, e.g. with a cable or something? - Where can I find good FTP Servers with QL Software? (Most links that I found seem dead) - I found some QL-World Scans with some game reviews in it. I'm interested in collecting games for the (standard) QL, as most of them don't seem to be just conversions from other systems but QL-specific developments. Is there some source on the net for this or do I have to buy them all, the real old stuff too? - Is anyone out there who would transfer software onto my own microdrive cartridges, if I sent them to him? So, now I have some hardware questions: - Does a normal atari-compatible joystick work with the QL? - Is there a kind of SCART-cable available? (The TV output is so terrible...) - How much effort is neccessary to connect a cd-rom-drive to the QL? (Because I think it's the easiest way to get new software) I'd be glad if someone could help me for a good start... I'm curious and want to spend some fun time with this machine - don't want to spend much money on hardware and stuff. Thank you very much Alex -- http://c64.alexanderklock.de C64 - Die einzig wahre PlayStation! ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
[ql-users] Dictionaries
I've just added a large collection of QTYP spell-checker dictionaries to the Dictionaries page on my website at http://www.dilwyn.uk6.net/index.html along with a few Lexicons, mostly for Celtic languages (Welsh, Irish and Scottish Gaelic, Manx and Breton). These Lexicons are mostly in plain text format, while the QTYP lists are in pure QTYP dictionary format. The Lexicons are like traditional printed dictionaries on the whole. There's a list of them below. There are many more, and they will be added as time allows. I've included a little 2,500 entry Pocket English dictionary as well as the Celtic language ones I've already converted. The Lexicons include: Welsh/English dictionary Irish Gaelic/English dictionary Scottish Gaelic/English dictionary English/Manx language dictionary Breton/English dictionary English language pocket dictionary The QTYP files have been compiled from internet based word lists and from PD/Shareware CD-ROMs, plus a few freeware QL-original dictionaries e.g. from national user group freeware collections in Europe. Using something like Geoff Wicks's QTYP Expand routine elsewhere on my website, QTYP owners can extract the word lists from these as plain text files quite easily, e.g. if you want to port them for use on other computers, or adapt them for use with other QL software. In their present format, once unzipped they can be used with QTYP and related applications like Spellcrib. Due to the sheer size of the expanded plain text versions, I won't be putting them on my website since I doubt that the anticipated low demand will not make it worthwhile committing such a lot of webspace to them. I am keeping the plain text dictionaries on my hard disk as part of the PD Library and would be able to supply them as a QXL.WIN CD-R for example. Below is a list of filenames, download size in brackets, language, number of words in each dictionary (as reported by QTYP_DED dictionary editor) and the actual size of the QTYP dictionary when unzipped. The plain text wordlists extracted from these dictionaries will generally be much larger, because QTYP applies some compression. Obviously if anyone has more QTYP dictionaries I would be pleased to add them to the collection. Of all the QTYP language dictionaries I was able to locate, the one I want isn't among them - Welsh. If anyone can find a Welsh word list of suitable size for a spell checker (20,000+ words) on the web I would be very happy to receive a copy! All the ones I've been able to find are either too small or in a format I can't decode. Here's the list of QTYP dictionaries uploaded. I'd like to acknowledge the help of Robert Newson in decoding some of these files - he found an invaluable source of information on the file formats. Never the less. John Shelton has never shown any awareness of this as he always charges for the number of copies printed at a pre-arranged price per copy. I prefer the printed A5 copy. A4 increases the printing cost and the postage, and does not confer any great benefits. This topic has been discussed several times at committee meetings, but they always forget why they turned it down last time.
