Do you mean, a PC equivalent to the Editor? or, silly question I admit,
a PC program to read PC Floppies? (I doubt it's this!)

I use for editing Notepad++ for Windows (at work) from
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ or, at work and home, VSCodium, which is
Visual Studio Code without the "ET Phone Home" stuff that Microsoft have
embedded into the editor. Available from https://vscodium.com/ for Mac,
Windows and Linux - many flavours thereof.

You know, QUANTA is always prepared to listen to anyone with a serious
proposition, it's just it's membership who don't seem to have that many
propositions for us to listen to!! This is quite different to QUANTA never
listening and when we have listened, we then decide our further actions if
 any.

We don't claim any praise for robbing Dilwyn from QLToday - after all, it
was GW's suggestion and we are grateful for it. {:-))

This may surprise you, John, but the inspiration came from Quanta.

As QL Today editor I analyse the content of the Quanta Magazine fairly
rigorously and I found it greatest weakness was its patchy news coverage.
This can includes a poor or non-existent presentation of Quanta's own news.
I knew that there could be no chance of significant improvement under you
and John Mason. An active news gathering policy is time consuming and both
of you had too many other Quanta duties to take on this responsibility.

I concluded the problem was insoluble until I saw how Quanta had tackled
the webmaster problem by looking further than the usual suspects. I
thought a similar approach to a news reporter would be possible.

The crazy thing was that Dilwyn told me that he was considering going on
the committee at Birmingham and we had a discussion about what Quanta job
he was most suited to, but I did not connect this to my news reporter
proposal.

Dilwyn is absolutely perfect for the role. He has the experience and does
not need training for the job; he has an impressive address book; and he
brings a welcome technical expertise to the Quanta committee.

However, I suspect that Quanta and Dilwyn will need to define the boundaries
of his role fairly clearly. At Manchester I had a discussion with JM about
what news items should go on Quanta's website and with you about making more
use of the QL-users list. Both of these things are rather more complicated
than they might seem at first sight.

I should perhaps explain for the benefit of people who are not familiar with
these, there are questions about how much information from the magazine
should go on the web when members are paying for it. There is also a need to
distinguish between official Quanta items and committee members personal
opinions,

Best wishes,

Geoff

One thing about all this chit-chat - everybody knows I'm news editor
now.

Any publicity is good publicity, eh?

QL Today has always managed decent enough news coverage under both
editors (and the few issues Jochen did alone), so let's see what we
can achieve for Quanta now. While I foresee this friendly rivalry and
good natured banter between the two organisations continuing, at the
end of the day we should be able to co-operate well when it matters
too. And I'm sure Geoff will keep us on our toes ;-)

Oh, and the nickname I put in an email to him was Lleidr Y Cadach
(napkin nicker, albeit the Welsh sounds nicer than the abrasive
English version) after his habit of walking out of restaurants with
napkins still affixed to his body at Quanta workshops. It won't mean
much to most, but it does to a Welsh speaker sound like the honorary
bardic names or alisases given to Eisteddfod competition bards, so he
should be proud he's been promoted to honorary Welshman ;-))

Don't get much chance to use it though!

Well done on getting the Quanta Editorship.

Very cheeky of them to pinch our ex-editor, but a masterstroke that

By the way Mr. Jones, you know the penalty for jumping ship. Be
 warned QL

 photos,

 Best wishes,

 Geoff
If Geoff thinks he has incriminating evidence on me, how about this:

Have a look at his Style Checker demo on disk 62 of the SJPD or The
Library collections, where there seems to be instructions on making an
at-omic bomb in a file called bomb_txt. Reference is made to about 50
pounds of plut-onium, connections to terrorist cells and so on. In his
defence, it does mention how to go about getting hold of that amount
of the material and warns you that people are bound to notice that
much of it going missing.

I always thought Geoff's terrorist activities were limited to
sabotaging Quanta AGMs, but now I know better :o

(and just in case the security authorities have picked up on this
email, I will gladly send a copy of the said file to you if you have
time to waste reading it, it's only a tongue in cheek text!).

Actuallly Dilwyn's first act as News Editor was to find a nickname for
private mailings to his QL Today rival. As it is in Welsh I can't be sure
that it means what he said it does (and the English is not all that polite)

What a good opportunity to remind everyone what QL Today's attitude is:

QL Today believes in healthy competition and we would like to see the
Quanta committee set up a news service, both in print and on the web, to
rival that of ours.

Editorial vol 11 issue 5 page 3

Quanta's members jeered at this suggestion at the Hove AGM, but Quanta's
committee did not,
