That's why it looks so much like Minerva during startup :-) Amstrad has (supposedly) relinquished all rights, however it would be good to contact him for a. ask permission to distribute it and b. get some more info on it... OK, those who looked into this when it was decreed that the QL ROMs could be distributed, anyone know status of Tyche now? Or how to contact Jonathan Oakley to see if he is able to release it? Nasta For my sins working for Patientline for the last 11 months...I was told by Tony Firshman or Laurence that Jonathan Oakley was one of the original design team working on the originals of these little Patientline hospital cable TV systems featured on BBC news yesterday, of all things using either a derivative of QDOS or something resembling QDOS a few years ago. It's now a mix of Windows CE and other Windoze flavours from 98 to NT and 2000 (no Jonathan any more AFAIK). No wonder I moan about the firm all the time is it ;-)) -- Dilwyn Jones

RE: [ql-users] Q-Emulator 2
Does anyone know of a way for Q-Emulator to skip the ROM type detection? The Ultra MG roms do not start as they are 64 K instead of 48.. Is there any hidden switch somewhere? Daniele? If you split the ROM in two files of 48KB and 16KB and install the latter as the QL's back rom, as Marcel says, you get a memory configuration equivalent to a 64KB ROM. However, there's currently no way to disable Q-emuLator's ROM detection. The reason is that Q-emuLator needs to recognise a few spots in the ROM to be able to interact with QDOS, for example to install new directory device drivers. Another option would have been to emulate parts of the QL hardware like the microdrive ports and the QL's coprocessor, and access files this way. It would then work with any ROM that can run on a real, unexpanded QL, but you wouldn't have some of Q-emuLator's capabilities, like the TRAP #3 extensions to access subdirectories (both on QDOS mediums and in the Windows file system), or being able to read QXL.WIN disk images. In a similar way, Q-emuLator tries to do some magic to give you keyboard emulation that is independent of the type of QL ROM and PC keyboard that you use. Finally, Q-emuLator tries to recognize ROMs to be able to apply a few patches that fix ROM bugs. For example, without patches a JS ROM QL would not be able to handle 16MB of RAM. If this ROM is almost like an MG, then it might be easy to change the emulator to accept it. If you send me the ROM I can find out why the emulator is rejecting it. Thanks, Daniele

I somehow doubt this was ever a serious company name on earth). Maybe an Internal Joke? Who knows? Well, interesting nonetheless. What's more interesting is that this ROM is FAST! Below are the results from qsbb_bas QLAY 0.90 with 640K, no NFA ROM, 2 mdv files attached, f option set to 1, running under WinXP PRO on an AMD K7@750Mhz JS/MGG/JSU --- Printing: 18500 Functions: 30560 Strings:42140 MGUK - Printing: 18820 Functions: 30540 Strings:40980 Minerva 1.89 Printing: 18860 Functions: 34140 Strings:45960 Tyche (Ver$ reports: T05) Printing: 19060 Functions: 36740 Strings:47880 My next step would be to try it with Speedscreen... (sometime later though!) 1. That just maybe a nice hacked ROM (I have to disassemble it to know for sure) That'd be my guess. I am not so sure this was hacked, as it seems by far the fastest rom I ever saw :-) Now i need a volunteer with an Eprom Programmer to try it on the Aurora (when my SGC is back ;-) Marcel

I got it booting up on QPC but it crashes after drawing the SuperBasic windows, I suspect it has a problem with my emulated microdrives. I remember those have often caused problems. Nonetheless very interesting. It did that to me to, until I set it up for memory below 1 Meg... It recognizes 640K with no problems... Its microdrive code must me weird though because although it reads the mdv files from QLAY, it cannot boot from them (you have to manually type lrun mdv1_boot etc...) And forget my advice for QemuLator (I thought only the 48kb limit bothered it), it still insists that it only works with known roms. Pitty really. Maybe Daniele can help... Hmmm imagine Q-Emulator emulating Thors as well (Simon will jump hoops for that ;-) The original QDOS was optimised for size, not for speed. With 16kb more to spend more speed is probably much easier to achieve. True :-) Phoebus
Re: [ql-users] Q-Emulator 2
Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is the Tyche ROM? Marcel According to Dilwyn that sent that to me, the Tyche was the codename for the Super QL that was developed by Sirius Cybernetics for Sinclair (Amstrad?). Apart from the above I know little about it... Anybody with more info? It does run however and executes basic programs and its a little faster (with a small test I run) than MGx roms Was sent to me by Simon Goodwin. Don't know much more about it and have never seen it running. -- Dilwyn Jones

At some point, I will need to write up the information Duncan and Wolfgang and Marcel sent me about the PE linkage block and mouse reading possibilities and add that as well...and add all this to the QL CD-ROMs which include all the info files...if only I could find th eoriginal files rather than having to type them in from paper!
