Does Postfix deliver to maildirs or Unix mailboxes?
It does deliver to Maildir, and that's how I have it configured.
If not to maildirs,
then qmail's pop3 service can't possibly work. That might explain your
exit 1.

i think the latter is correct. this is my fault; i'm responsible for
setting up our secondary, and the admin who set up our primary told me
that it was qmail-1.03. it's definitely qmail, but must be an older
version.
