I solved this by having just my username in the .qmail-root file in the
/var/qmail/alias directory. That is I use "dan" rather than "./Maildir/" or
even "/home/dan/Maildir/" to receive emails sent to root. Now any cron

The INSTALL doc. step 1. says to "mkdir /var/qmail" then
step 3. says to "make setup check" which results in a Error
message "mkdir: cannot make directory '/var/qmail': File exists"
You might need to check the permissions of each Maildir.
If a Maildir is in the UserA's home but is owned by UserB then checkpasswd
can't find the UserA Maildir.
