check for a Maildir in your users directory.
If the Maildir is there make sure that the user owns the directory.

I am having the same problem...
(I send an email to the list earlier with the contents of all files I
thought might be relevant, but I haven't seen that mail come up. Can anyone
confirm that it was sent to the list? Perhaps I made a mistake in
sending...)

Root never receives mail on qmail systems. You have to define an alias for
root that delivers to an unpriviledged account.
The error means either that no maildir exists at the users home directory
or that it's permissions prevent

My guess would be, that qmail-local is unable to chdir to your Maildir.
That's just a guess though.

delivery 460 deferral: Unable_to_chdir_to_maildir (#4.2.1)
there are hundreds of these messages, but only for one user (myself)
The rest of the mail gets delivered as usual.
