I can attest to what Eric is saying... I use a QMT to front-end for several exchange servers. In DNS, the only MX records point to MX servers (mail.it4soho.com mail2.it4soho.com). Note that the latter (mail2) is actually the same store forward config as what you're trying to accomplish!
