It seems like y'all took acidophylus and it caused a UTI from a psuedamonas
strain. I've never not tested positive for psuedamonas. If it isn't dominant
then your pretty normal and the best treatment is excersize and rest. We
have these immune systems that can pull us through some pretty nasty
infections without a lot of the major anti biotics.

I use to have a para friend that intermitant catheterized himself with a
catheter he kept in his hatband. Yea, Yucky! I'm cetainly not telling anyone
what to take or not take, I'm just pointing out that as quads most of us do
not have impaired immune systems. How many of you remember having a cold.
32 years as a quad, I've had some kickass infections, septicemia, pneumonia,
bone infections, influenza, even a brain infection(explains a lot) but never
a cold.

About Stacy having the runs. every anti-biotic has that as a side effect
which in turn subjects you to e.coli which causes a different infection that
needs another anti-biotic that also causes the runs. Trust me the
acidophylus didn't make it worse. In fact, acidophylus and other pro biotics
eat the stuff the bad bacteria needs and can help maintain your system where
your not taking the stuff that gives you the runs. Also, opiates will help
stop the runs and several over the counter treatments may work for you. I do
wish my advice would work quickly for you, Stacy. I also spend long periods
of time waiting for help when I get runs or a condom comes off. I often have
gas and cant tell if I had an accident. I have a weird neighbor that thinks
that is so funny he stops in to break wind to try to torment me.

We have quadriplegia in common , but quads just aren't all alike. What works
for me may not work for you. I don't treat UTI's as long as I can live with
them. I get a low grade fever, I take tylenol. About every 5 years I get an
IVP to see what my system is doing and if there is any stones.

The ladies don't have an option to use a condom catheter and looking at some
new statistics, there isn't a significant reduction in infections with one.

A lot of the differences we have is the doctors we see. My doctors are
usually just curious why I'm still alive. I don't go for tests that don't
produce information about me that I don't need. Doctors love running tests
on us that produce generalized data that has nothing to with me. My doctor
told me I had a syrinx before an MRI was available. I'm on Medicare/Medicaid
and this test will change nothing.

Oh, by the way, if you sit in on a part of a medical lecture, nobody cares.
If there is a university hospital nearby, I highly recomend this. Just say
you didn't want to interupt and couldn't leave without help. Dr. Randall
Braddom is a goldmine of information and only talks down to stupid doctors.
The people at your local GNC can be great help.

Once again, Stacy, don't give up. it is a hard balance to get but it will
work. If you use an opiat to stop from having a bowel movement then use
miri-lax the day before you want your bowels to move. Wear lots of perfume?

Seriously, do you guys get colds?

Best wishes and always in my prayers,

john

2007-10-03 Thread Stacy Harim
I realize what acidophilus does. I have been taking an extra pill a day and
still having accidents. This antibiotic(zyvox) must be some pretty potent
stuff. I just fear that when I can get up, I'm going to mess up my pants and
wheelchair cushion bc it often gets past the depends I wear. Having a roho is
awful when I leak around my catheter bc of a kink or if its clogged. I can't
imagine cleaning it from a accident from loose stool. It's quite depressing to
just think about.

I have had the flu once in 6 years. I didn't get a shot last year and of
course got sick. Otherwise I haven't gotten sick even when I was in school and
sat next to the same girl all semester and she was really sick for a week.

So to be clear, I'm quite aware what acidophilus doesand I did get it from GNC.

I know that it might sound a bit silly at this point, but have you considered
taking the apple cider vinegar/ honey mix, twice a day for a week. Baseline
the PH of your urine at the beginning and at one week intervals. This mix
should not interfere with the meds you are taking, but if you have any

I have some but the problem is that I transfer and it slides on me because I
cant pick myself up with m arms anymore since I lost so much strength. I had a
hard time with them when I could pick myself up. When I slide, it slides. It's
not much fun. I suppose I could put it underneath the cover but my covers are
in bad shape and I would hate to have to wash them that much.

Good suggestion, ty,

Stacy---while your having accidents, try to put an extra cover over the top of
your Roho to help extra protect it from getting into your cusion...the bed
pads hospitals use for grown ups are too large, but the hospital size for
babies is just about the right size...see if you can pick up a few or buy a
couple for when you are having bowel problems. Dan

Re: [QUAD-L] Psuedamonas UTI

2007-10-03 Thread Danny Hearn
HI, LorI, Yes we have had a lot of uti problems last few years. While you
were off the list or unable to respond---I wrote about how I also had my 1st
bladder stone removed just this past Febuary, it was large about a golf ball
size, So I don't know what is causing my infections now...I was hoping after
that things would go well for a long time. The Lab my insurance uses is
INCOMPETENT ! always throwing my culture out saying ( more than 1 organism )
So last week I made them write MUST TEST FOR ALL ORGANISMS...because I have a
supra pubic catheter and ALWAYS have more than 1 . This time they did it
correct and found out yesterday it is Pseudamonas..I called 1st thing this
morn but still have not heard from my Urologist as to what to do? The other 2
times in years past he told me wait and see what happens, and both times I was
rushed to the emergency with Autonomic Dysreflexia feeling like I was gonna
die...Also my bloodstream was infected and my white blood
cells were almost gone, I was so weak I could hardly sit up. I'm so confused
NOW--I don't know if I should wait or if It can possibly get better OR will the
past repeat.? We changed my catheter today and flushed with acetic
acid..my wife stayed home from work to help do all this. To tpo it all
off---We had a vacation to Branson Mo, planned with family members for 4 day's
the 20th to 24th of this month! My wife and other family had this scheduled for
a year...I sure hope I don't cause it to be messed up. Oh well such is life...I
hope this will work out soon. Take care and thanks for all the advice
from all you on the list.!Dan H.

Lori Michaelson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Hi Danny,

You and I have been talking (around 2 years now?) about the chronic UTIs that
we both have
been plagued with. But it seems like you have not had very good luck with
competent doctors.
Neither have I but I finally found out that the culprit were those very big,
big bladder stones
that had been sitting in growing in my bladder for years and kept growing.
Anyway, you said that you have had a bad UTI for a month now! If it is
bad then I must assume
it has gone systemic and you have been running a fever with severe chills for a
whole month?
Something does not sound right. Not to mention being extremely dangerous!!!
In other words...
what the F***? have you or the doctors than waiting on/for? After a whole
month... you just
got urine culture results today which only take three days (on the outside)?

Just before, and after, having my bladder stones removed a year ago this past
May...
the bug that came after me twice in 2 months was Pseudomonas. It is one of the
worst ones and both times
I had to be treated with IV antibiotics via a PICC line at home.
Again, you and I have discussed these ongoing UTIs both on list and off list.
 There must
be some source, or culprit, causing your chronic infections. Mine was bladder
stones
but it has to be a process of elimination kind of deal. And only you know your
body best!
You already know that I have had repeated serious UTIs such as Pseudomonas.
Yes, it is very depressing not to mention life-threatening. And going through
an entire month
... how in the world did you let it go that long if it WAS so BAD? My fevers
that bad really quick
and I thought I would die before ibuprofen in some sort of antibiotic began
kicking in.
Then finding out that Pseudomonas has been growing in there the whole time?
I would
began to think that your urologist OR even your regular physician... sits
around reading
comic books rather than trying to help you!
As far as how many times one can use the IV drugs before the bug gets
resistant to them
it is really academic if you NEED them anyway. My greatest fear with all my
troubles ALSO
was the fear that the bugs were growing more and more resistant. After all...
when you have to resort to IV antibiotics... that is scary enough! There is
nothing left to resort to.
This is what leads me to think that your position does not give a rat's ass
about your well-being.
How you describe it... this is dead serious and something not to just brush off
again and again.

Also, like I have told you so many times... you might need to travel to get a
better urologist
and one really cares about your well-being! This quack that you keep going to
has not
been very helpful... has he? Therefore, because these things can get quite
serious...
you better get real proactive real fast. If I sound like I am yelling at you
or preaching
to you... maybe it is because that I care more about you than your doctor does!
 Tough love
if you want to call it that. :-)
I was so upset when I got a Pseudomonas infection AFTER having my bladder
stones out
and my doctor was not happy either. *I* finally found the answer on the
Internet. To be brief...
I found out that by me eating a banana a day... that amount
