OK, so you remember we were discussing how to manage delegating food prep?
Well, here is a debate I came across -- help me out here people. This is how
I always made my P B J sandwich ~ first you put butter on a slice of
twelve grain bread, next you put peanut butter on top of the butter, then
you put the jelly on top of the peanut butter, then the other slice of bread
on top. OH and of course it is to be cut in half vertically not
horizontally.
This is how my Aid (my sweetheart) thinks it should be done. First, white
bread, then no butter at all, then peanut butter on one slice of bread, then
jelly on the other slice of bread and cut into four's. I don't think so.
What do you guys think? Bobbie

I go from one extreme to the other with my body temp; but generally I am
freezing, unless I am in the heat too long and then it takes me forever to cool
off. I had a full muscle flap in'01 on my right ischium that was a result from
the wound getting osteomyelitis (that nearly frickin' killed me). I spent a
month in the hospital and 5 weeks off of my bottom at home; gradually getting
up in my chair for short duration's until my skin could handle 8 to 10 hrs. Now
these days to make sure I maintain good skin integrity, my nurse checks my
skin every 6 to 7 hours (just during the day) and applies a thin layer of
bag balm on the bum, then I am good to go for another 6 to 7 or even 10 to 12
hrs. if I had to. I sleep in a water-bed, and have for 20 yrs. and it has
worked great, plus it is warm and toasty!
Ruth I am sorry to hear of you losing spouse and the life you had; peer groups
may be of some help (a place to vent), when things are bad I look around and
see that it could be worse. If I can't bring myself up I ask the Lord for some
help!

I'm a C 4-6 quad, auto accident 30 yrs ago, female.
My normal temp. all year long is 96-97 degrees. Below 96 I'm physically cold,
when my temp is 99 or higher I'm too hot.
I drink very weak hot decaf tea all year long [my nephrologist calls it
colored water]. I am usually cold, but this last winter I just slept with a
very light blanket. I wear shorts all year long to make getting dressed and
undressed easier on my helpers. I wear long socks, leg warmers and a blanket on
my lower half and a coat, shawl like scarf over and around my head, I make sure
my ears, nose and mouth is covered when I go out in the cold.
I do have issues when it gets hot. I only drink hot tea indoors. [I'm a sun
person], I use a cold wet towel around the back of my neck, I constantly keep
wiping my face with a cold cloth, when possible I ask whom ever is around
to use a spray bottle to mist me down and I drink cold Propel water. I don't
drink plain water, my Dr. has me drink Propel to help me keep from getting
dehydrated and it helps keep me from getting light headed and too low blood
pressure [I run low normally anyway].
I've been a quad since 10/27/1978, I was in the hospital for 3 months got
sores on both on my heels, tailbone and both shoulder blades. I then went into
rehab for 3 months, the sores got healed within 1/2 of the time there [hubbard
tank w/ betadine added].
My 2nd sore I got was in 1983 at my tailbone [not caused by sitting], it
required surgery [skin-flap no. 1] 2 weeks in hosp. back up in w/c 16-18 hrs. a
day.
In 2000 I got 2 p/s one under each butt check at the underwear line,
the one on right side healed; the left had to be operated on [May 2001
skin-flap no. 2] 2 weeks in hosp. and I was gradually aloud up in w/c 6-10 hrs.
a day [I'd push it a couple of extra hrs. on special occasions].
2003 p/s on tailbone wound care Dr. said he could get me healed no
surgery, unless the tailbone has gotten infected. MRI done [May 2003 skin-flap
no. 3], but this time they removed my coccyx [tailbone] and sacrum [bone above
tailbone] had to be removed, was given 2 units of blood, in the hosp. 17 days
and in nursing home for 18 days. I was aloud up in w/c gradually up 20 mins a
day to no longer than 8 hrs. [on special occasions maybe 1-2 hrs. longer].
2008 I got a p/s under left butt check [again] went to wound care center
from Feb. to Sept.. On Sept. 24th I had surgery [skin-flap no. 4]  I was in the
hosp. 5 days allowed to come home, stay in bed, get turned frequeintly [yawl
right]  I've been given permission to get up in my w/c 3 times

[QUAD-L] Sore on tail bone

2009-03-21 Thread Cullen
I have been having a lot of secretions from my trac probably from desert pollen
this Winter and now Spring. I have been sitting more upright in bed and in my
chair to keep my airway clear. This morning during our daily butt check a
weeping sore was found on my tail bone, this is unusual for me since I almost
never have skin issues. It is Sat morning no VA sci unit open and no sci nurse
to call. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to treat it until Mon.

I know, being a quad for almost 12 years I should know, but really, I just
don't have skin issues and I don't want to be on my stomach for 6 weeks.

I like things done in a particular way.  How my bed is made, clothes folded,
etc.  I have had issues with people and finally got someone that does things
exactly how I ask for them except she is late a lot but that is off topic.

They need to realize they are working for you and should do things how you like
them.  If they were in your shoes they would be the same way.  You would do it
a certain way if you were to do it yourself and since you cant, its like their
hands are your hands.

Hi All,
OK, I have a question about food preparation. Let's say you'd like a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich (or another kind of sandwich) that you can't make. Do
you just ask for that sandwich and except it as it is made by the person making
it? Or do you try and instruct how you prefer the sandwich? For instance; I
like a lot of peanut butter, or I don't want that kind of jelly. Dose the
person making the sandwich or meal, think you are being a pain in the butt by
being so particular?

I know there is a reason for it and unfortunately it'll be the day I die when I
find out.  I believe it was for a greater purpose.  I've done some soul
searching and talked to my pastor about it and believe that what happens with
me isn't about me. After I was injured, I thought I was doing most everything
right then a mess of medical problems that held me back from my education, then
a whole new struggle.  I thought the struggles this difficult with agencies
would have been over with but no so now I'm starting over.  It took me a while
to not be angry about it but the better I'm feeling physically and coming to
grips with the fact my movement got worse after the several fusions over the
last 2 years and more reliant on others for help on top of needing a power
chair now because my chair tips up ramps since I am unable to lean forward.
And the pain, my God the pain in my back. Ok went on a rant.  Thought I knew
what my destiny was, now have no
 idea.

Re: [QUAD-L] How to make a P B J sandwich correctly

2009-03-21 Thread wheelchair
Potato.. Po tat to. Tomato too Mot to. Pop or soda. All the same
except for the difference.
A Coke was once a coke and now what is it? It doesn't have cane sugar. It
doesn't have caffeine.
It doesn't have any of the original contents, but is still called a coke. So
much has changed in the interest of a few.

Take for instance, a peanut butter and Jelly sandwich. It started out on
white bread with peanut butter and grape jelly. Depending on who was making
the sandwich, and who it was for determined how much of each was placed on
each
slice of bread. Those with money to waste found themselves trimming the
crust of the edges and cutting each sandwich into 4 sections. Some people
felt,
as I did, that if you placed a peanut butter n jelly sandwich into a plastic
bag and then into a paper bag or lunchbox for a couple of hours before you
eat it... it makes the sandwich tastes better. A bag of chips and glass of
whole milk and you were riding in tall cotton, as they say in the South.

Over the years, much has changed to suit one's personal needs. Chunky peanut
butter, whole butter, Jam, preserves, wheat bread, whole grain bread and
hamburger buns if you didn't have bread. Elvis was known to have a midnight
snack of peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Some things don't change, but
apparently so much has changed in the proper recipe from the North to the
South
and the East to the West.

Turn offs are stale and moldy bread. Green peanut butter and moldy jelly.
But when you are hungry and you don't have a choice, the standard peanut
butter and jelly sandwich will bring a smile to almost any kid, grand kid, or
aging grandparent. You will notice that in England or the United Kingdom, you
won't find a person who know how to make a peanut butter n jelly sandwich.
They think its gross.

Enjoy life!
Best Wishes

Re: [QUAD-L] Wheelchair Batteries at Auto Zone?

2009-03-21 Thread Lori Michaelson
I remember was my first two wheelchairs (power wheelchairs of course) I used
acid, deep cell batteries. I also remember a couple of occasions whereby
active not want to wait to go through a vendor so I went to a local place
called Battery World (in my area) to get them with no problem.
Now, I have had my Permobil 10 years and 2 months now with gel cell
batteries and have only had to have been replaced twice. But here is a *first
(one of my batteries actually blew up on and out of the positive post
therefore completely disabling the other one)* Here is the story:

After coming home from Wal-Mart on Tuesday at around 5:30 pm, hubby I sat
outside to enjoy the weather. I began to smell a very very very strong
sulfuric rotten egg smell but hubby [Dave] could not smell it although he
was only a couple of feet away from me. I thought it was from a vehicle or
something and the longer I just sat there are quickly dissipated.

Then, unexpectedly, a friend stopped about 10 minutes later and we came
inside. I was talking to her in the living room and, again, I could smell
that very strong sulfuric rotten egg smell but she could not smell it
either. I was quite perplexed at this time since the smell was so very
strong and I was only a couple of feet away from two people who did not
smell it!

Finally, after going to the kitchen for dinner and smelling it again (Dave
could not) and then going to bed—Dave said it was coming from the chair.
Dave could finally smell it by then because he was transferring me directly
from the chair. Also, the chair began to chug, chug along as if I was
running out of battery charge which could not be the case because I did not
run it all that much and it was fully charged. We put it on charge after I
got in bed but in only 60 seconds it showed that it was fully charged.

The next morning (Wednesday) we called DEPENDABLE because they were the last
to change the batteries in the chair *6 years ago.* We were so very
fortunate for two new men to be working there (Joe and Andy) and at first
they did not think it was the batteries but then decided it was. So they
immediately ordered gel cell batteries and they were supposed to come from
Phoenix and arrive on Friday. I am only two hours away from Phoenix.

So I was looking at being in bed for an indefinite period of time if it was
more than the batteries alone. This is because my hypersensitive body will
not allow me to sit in any other chair without having bad AD problems, etc.

On Friday when we called (today, later yesterday morning) — as usual someone
had not done their job and the batteries did not arrive. They are now coming
from California and are supposed to come in on Monday. ($...@! ers!
The guy who was working on my chair today was Andy and was very very very
nice and very accommodating. He has been in the business for 20+ years and
said he has never seen batteries last 6 years (5 yrs -yes. 6 yrs - no) and
wondering how we were able to do that. LOL. We told him there was no great
secret and that I had been running the chair for miles taking Brandy on MANY
MANY WALKS over the years and so on and so forth. He also thought that the
chair itself was in very good condition for being 10 years old.

Anyway, thank God that he had some gel cell batteries that had been sitting
on the shelf that he put in the chair so that I could have them over the
weekend so I did not have to stay in bed until Monday (hopefully when the
new batteries arrive). The batteries are huge and did not exactly fit my
chair but they WORK so that I was able to get out late yesterday afternoon
and be able to be up over the weekend.

I have been in bed since Tuesday evening and, without being able to move and
with it being more work for Dave to take care of all my needs when I am
stuck in bed, I am so thankful he had the extra batteries on hand that would
work with my chair. Also, we found out that the guy (Andy) who just looked
at the chair and ordered my batteries for me, etc this week used to work for
another company (Apria) and had put my other batteries in 6 1/2 years ago!
He even recognized his writing on part of the old battery! LOL

In sum, that is the downfall of gel cell batteries. Can't just go pick them
up somewhere and install them yourself. Especially with a Permobil power
chair like mine.

  Hi John,

I would caution anyone considering wet cell batteries or anything less then

When replacing batteries, look at what you have already and copy the name,
make, model, amperage and specifications. This way, no matter which brand
is purchased the size, specifications, and amperage will remain the same.
Most DME batteries are warranteed for 6 months. Auto Zone or Wal Mart may
 offer you
 a longer warranty term.
