There's a series called Millennium that I enjoyed reading, The Girl
with the Dragon Tattoo,
The Girl Who Played with Fire, and
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest.

There's a Hollywood movie about the 1st one, and foreign films about all 3.

I was also going to suggest Outlander. I really enjoy the TV series and
know it is based on a book series.
