The OP should probably open the back panel and look to see if there

Given the symptoms, I would suggest disconnecting that internal hard

Welcome to Mac it may be attempting to access the broken or scrambled
internal drive. Or the floppy drive may be dirty (a common problem easily
remedied by an ordinary floppy cleaning disk).

I assume the OP knows that it will attempt to boot from any floppy
automatically, but you generally have to hold down the C key or
Cmd-Opt-Shift-Delete to get it to ignore the hard drive and attempt to
boot from the CD.

The 575 uses a SCSI hard drive, typically 250M in the original. I have
plenty of these and the OP can contact me off-list to buy one. The hard
drive and battery are the most likely components to fail on Macs of this
vintage; battery failure does not prevent the 575 from booting.

... i have been told that if it can not find a hard
drive then it wont be able to boot from cd or floppy.

Not correct.

... often the stock CD drive that came with the LC575 was not
fast enough to boot the computer.

I've booted many a 580 and several 575's from CD without ever seeing this
problem.

I have a LC 580. How to the two measure up. I need to find an Install
for an Apple 2400 Printer for the LC 580.

The 580 is a Quadra so it is on-topic for this list. To turn it on, you
must set the power switch in the back to on *and* press the power button
on the keyboard. The 580 has the 4.5V square PRAM battery which goes dead
every few years (the 6115 you described has a dead 3.6V round battery).
The 580 uses an IDE hard drive so large replacement drives are cheap.

Open Chooser under the Apple Menu and see if Color SW 2400 or Color SW
2500 shows up. If so, your driver is already installed (it ships with
most versions of the OS). The 2500 driver is recommended for the 2200,
2400, and 2500 printers. Be sure to turn off AppleTalk or use the modem
port for the printer. On most StyleWriters you need to print something
every month or so to keep the ink from drying up and clogging.

I searched for like nubus cards, scsi boxes, anything that would be

How can I import video to my Quadra 900 or 800 from my standard analog
camera? There has to be a way. I really want to do this just for fun,
so any pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks

Video Vision Studio by Radius. It was $3000 - $4000 back when. You
can probably pick one up on Ebay for $25 - $50 now days.

I've got a pair of VideoVision Nubus cards with studio upgrades, but no
software or break-out boxes for connecting the cables. I also have a
MicroNet NuPort III which was similar to the JackHammer. Contact me off
list if interested.

I want to take the CD drive out of a Performa 637CD, but I can't seem

First you take the front bezel off. It is secured by two latches on the
bottom edge. Usually a finger on each pushing up does it. If they are
really stubborn, I turn the whole machine upside down so I can press down
on the latches.

Now you can see the CD drive, but watch out -- there is a metal plate
blocking one corner of it from coming out. One screw removes that plate.
Finally you have to slide the CD sled forward, which is latched and may
have a lot of friction.

going to find.

Just about any IDE hard drive will work. You will want to partition any
multi-gig drive. Takes a Comm Slot ethernet card or an LC PDS slot
ethernet card. All readily available on eBay, LEM Swap list, etc.

and upgrade to OS 8.1...

IMO 7.6.1 is the best OS for a Quadra, unless you need 8.1 for a specific
app.

Intended use would be a glorified jukebox -
somewhere I could stash a ton of mp3's and back-up other files from my main
mac. Is this realistic? Can a current generation OS X machine communicate
with an older OS 8 machine over a network?

Yes. It's actually somewhat easier for OS X to be the client and the old
Mac the server. The built-in FileSharing of Classic Mac OS works but can
be slow. If you need more speed or many clients look for a copy of
AppleShare server.

The TV option works well. One thing this Mac won't do well is play MP3s.

I am now the owner of several macs ranging from
Classic SEs (6.0.8) to Quadras (7.5.5) to PowerPCs
(9.1), et. al. I need some help. I am trying to find
a nice Freeware or cheapware virus scanner and I am
not finding any.

Well you really don't need a Virus Scanner, I have not found a Mac Virus in
15 years now.

You may not need one for your own computer, but if you acquire other
people's Macs you should either wipe their hard drives from a locked
startup disk or run Disinfectant, which is free and works fine for me
through Mac OS 9.1. A small portion of the old Macs I've been getting
were infected with some of the viruses that Disinfectant blocks.
www.pure-mac.com is a good directory of Mac software where you can find
Disinfectant.
