[q] OT - Wireless Access Point info

2006-01-18 Thread Don Wakefield
This post is a bit off topic, but I hope someone can
help.

I have a House Branded Wireless Access Point
purchased at CompUSA approximately 2 years ago (when
they were blowing out the 802.11B only products to
make room for the 802.11G's) At first, since I was
the only kid on the block with wireless, I set it up
naked and ran without wired equivalent protection
settings. Recently I have noticed another signal in
the neighborhood and it is now time that I locked my
unit down!

The problem is that in the two years since installing
it and letting it sit, the unit no longer responds to
the password I gave it. My guess is that it has
regressed to the default settings possibly from one of
our past power outages. I have pushed the reset button
on the unit, (just to be sure we were starting from
scratch,) and now need to have the Default password
to get in. Naturally I cannot find the instruction
manual and I am hoping that somebody in the group will
have a similar unit and will be able to provide me
with the missing password. Any ideas on how to start
over would be appreciated.

This is what I know about the unit:

   MAC address: 0008A1425AD7 DA
   CompUSA SKU: 295105

My guess is that it was originally made by CNet
Technologies
(but they no longer admit to any products before
G's.)

[q] Excel Help Anyone? (OT)

2004-06-19 Thread Don Wakefield
Are there any Excel masters out there? I surely am NOT
and what should be a simple fix has so far eluded me.
I have an item checklist which has one column which
contains a list of items. The column immediately to
its left is a narrow column which will receive either
a Y, an N, or an NA (Yes, No, or Not Applicable)

My problem is that at some point in the construction,
a few of these narrow cells (and I do mean only
several) have magically become intuitive in a
disagreeable way. They will accept a Y, but when an
N is typed, those few cells create a drop down menu
which is populated with NA and Excel populates the
cell with NA even if you only type N and return.

I would like to either loose this intuitive ability
altogether, or enhance it so that each item had a
selection which included both N and NA (in that
order) so a choice could be made from the list's
natural state of Y. Copying cells which act one way
into cells which act the other has not been
effective.I don't know what turned this on in these
few cells. I don't know how to improve it to become
useful, and I can't find a way to turn it off.

Anybody have any ideas as to how to kill or enhance
Excel's intuition?

HP Laserprinter questions

2004-01-29 Thread Don Wakefield
(Sorry for the double post but I realised that I
neglected to put in a subject.)

I have been looking at a new HP Laserjet 1300 printer
and have a few questions which the salesman was unable
to answer. I bet there is someone on the list who can
answer them for me, so please offer your
recommendations.

1)
There are 2 models of the 1300, one with ethernet
built in, which is $200 more expensive than the other.
There are external print server boxes which sell for
$50 and feed the parallel signal to the printer while
offering an ethernet socket to the network. Do you
think the overhead of the server box would be
noticable to a typical moderate user like myself? (I
have so many places I could put the $150 difference in
cost, assuming that I could live with the results.)

2)
The model states it uses the HP language to emulate
Postscript 2. I only have experience with the
Laserwriter II, which to my understanding uses the
original Postscript. Will the emulater truely be
faithful to a licensed Postscrip chip results and
will the overhead questions of emulation noticably bog
down the process?

I welcome your recommendations.
